Oooh! RIM INTERCHANGEABILITY QUESTION!

What rims fit what hubs?

For instance, I have access to some 17" AMG rims for a "decent" price, but will they fit my W123?

Do they make adapters?

Here they are:

Probably need to move this to the Wheel and tire forum.

Here they are:
You will get some help from Luke at the Tire Rack if you post this on the Tires and Wheels section. Try putting 8 in wheels on the '83 and you aren't going to be happy even if they fit without scraping the carp out of the brake calipers or fender because of the rolling friction. You do not need wide tires on that vehicle
Most of what you need to know is already posted in the Forum, and it has to do with OFFSET.
The 123 uses a low offset, 23mm or so. You will find most large wheels either have large offsets to clear big brakes and the different suspensions that came after the 123, but anouthner thing to be aware of is some of the newer wheels were made for thicker lugbolts. MB had a lot of feedback about tire monkeys torquing the snot out of the (12mm?) thin bolts and breaking them off so they went to a (14mm?) thicker bolt. The seats on the later wheels are made for the thicker bolts so no way are you gonna find the right bolts to SOME of the later wheels, even if the offset was right. Some are even different shaped seats, cone instead of ball shaped. If you are looking on eBay beware that many sellers don not describe the wheels well at all (nor do they even know anything about wheels and tires).
There are aftermarket wheels that fit the 123,. Better yet, some of the 126 chassis used the "flat face" wheels that fit perfectly. I am running those now on my 123's and the handling is greatly improved. As well as there are better tires available I doubt you need V rated tires but they handle great!
Yes they do not look like the new spoked wheels or AMG wheels but if thats what you are after good luck. I have seen the 16 in CLK320 2000 forged alloys wheels on a 123, they fit ok and look nice.
I recommend NOT using wheel spacers. Ever. In Australia they are outlawed. I believe too many junk spacers were being used and some serious accidents occurred. A hub centric spacer will work OK, But watch out because some tire shops will turn you away if they know you have spacers, they refuse to work on cars. There is a reason for that but I'll let someone else who knows more about it post some comments.

from what I understand, any rim with the correct bolt pattern will fit the 123 IF it's 17" or larger, it clears the tie rods!

bolt pattern: 5x112

I went with 16" rims because I thought any larger would rub the fenders.

My rims are 16x7.5 and ET: +25

nahh, with larger rims you just have to get lower profile tires... keep the overall diameter the same as stock. OK, maybe a little larger than stock is ok... there sure is a TON of room in those fenders!

Last time I checked they were called...... WHEELS. I don't know how you could install just the rim of the WHEEL without the actual WHEEL.

thanks DH... but I believe rim is the technical term. wheel is a pretty generic term that can mean anything from car to tires...

Okay. Topic not moved, yet. This is staying warm so I think I'll ride it a little longer.

So basically, no one here has done this exact swap?

I'm being offered a set by a local mercedes shop, price undetermined. Pretty low however.

I just want to get my facts straight before I go into my negotiations.

What they're worth, if they fit, what size tires would be needed to keep the original profile, etc.

Keep it coming, this is getting good.

You will never really be happy with spacers unless you got the H&R route and even then it is questionable. Find wheels that were meant for your ride. You will want an offset of under 22 depending on the width of the wheel.

a member here has those on his w123. I cannot remember his name but its the blue w123 sedan with the supercharged ford engine.

anyways..

you're probably going to want to go with 225/45/17's or wider to fit the wheel.. they will fit without spacers. I want to say they will. Reason being, is the only reason for spacers is to not only look normal but also clear the tie rods up front, and with 17's the added diameter allows the tie rods to sit within the wheel with no contact issues

a little side note

cars have wheels

bicycles and toilet bowls have rims
