84 300D wanting to upgrade the rims

Hello to all glad i finally found this site! Anyway im wanting to upgrade my rims these old 14 in. rims just look way to small for this body , im seeing to much space inside the fenders, and yes it has correct wheel and tire size on it b4 anyone asks i know some of you wont like what i want to do here but im a young guy and i just want to "in my own opinion" make it look a little better by upgrading the rims and tires, well i managed to get the bolt pattern 5x112 with an offset of 32 to 45 mm, the problem with that is i can only find 17 and 18 inch rims wich i think will look like more rim than car, iwas thinkin that 16 inch rims would fit just rite, and i know that it will not ride as smooth as it does with the 14's but that'll still ride better than that log truck of a 91 s-10 4x4 blazer i had. I cant find any pics of any 1980's 300d's with 16,17,or 18 inch rims to see how they look so i would know which way to go. And theres not any place close to where i live that has any desent rims that i could place on it to see how it would look, they all have to order the rims that fit it. so does anybody have any pics of their 300D turbo with a nice set of upgraded rims and tires on it that you could show me. thanx for any and all replies,I do appreciate it TNBENZ

It will be hard and pricey but you can put 15" budnts on your car if you want. Good luck finding them.

grubby wheels

Hi, my first post so I hope I get it right. i have an 85 300D turbo that is in excellent shape except for the wheels. They are not dinged up but they look like they are peeling and I was wondering if there is some sort of process for refurbing the wheels. Thanks ,Bill

Don't think I can help you much Bill...but I'd recommend using the search button in the blue bar above. I personally have about 3 sets of 14" bundts in my shed, so if I think one set is in need of refinishing, I'll just swap out the wheels. Either that or mask and do the Krylon touch.

IMO the best method would be to remove the tires and have the wheels bead blasted and powder coated.

I think the best thing for you to do is to buy this set of 14" bundts in my garage. They're in perfect condition and have brand new tires on them. I need to get them out of there. Where do you live, Bill?

You know, for all the aftermarket/replica wheels out there for MBs, it kind of astounds me that there is no aftermarket 15" or 16" bundt. Anybody out there with a foundry who wants to go into business with me?

I wonder if it could be plotted on a water jet and cut from a blank. I guess that would make it too expensive though. Probably too much cutting time per wheel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_jet_cutter

Quote:
A water jet cutter is a tool capable of slicing into metal or other materials using a jet of water at high velocity and pressure, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. The process is essentially the same as water erosion found in nature but accelerated and concentrated by orders of magnitude. It is often used during fabrication or manufacture of parts for machinery and other devices. It has found applications in a diverse number of industries from mining to aerospace where it is used for operations such as cutting, shaping, carving, and reaming.
The company "Flow" has a water jet available that can cut 3D parts.

The "blank" I mentioned is just a block of aluminum or other material before it's cut.

Do you know if that is how alloy wheels are made? I thought they were cast for some reason. Maybe it would be less expensive to make it in two parts?

Some wheels are cut on a lathe, some are done on a milling machine and some are cast. I think I saw someone do a wheel with a water jet, which was really just a fancy milling machine.

I'd imagine that machined wheels are more accurate and balanced than cast ones.

I think I've read that there are bundt "hubcaps" too. That might be cool. Plain 15" or 16" steel wheels with stamped out bundt hubcaps.
