126 Alloy Wheel Discoloration Repair

Typical $5 a can stuff doesn't work.

Has anyone had any luck with this product?

Thanks

I just cleaned mine with Simple green, sanded down, and used Duplicolor Wheel Paint, 7 or 8 light coats, and 4-5 light coats of clear.

W126 wheels are Painted aluminum, and over time, the clearcoat wears away, then you're down to the paint. Add that to years of not waxing and car wash wheel cleaner acids, and they'll turn yellow.

This product looks like it restores aluminum wheels that aren't painted.

Thanks - sounds like a "can-do" project.

At BenzWorldOrg a member posted that the wheels must be taken to a shop for stripping, repainting, etc.

Several hundred dollars going this route.

I like your idea much better.

What did you sand with? Did you use a spray gun with the paint?

E150,

I used simple green / water mixture 1:1 to degrease and clean inner and outer, then let it air dry.

I bought a 3M AutoPak and started with 400 grit to get the old terrible paint off, and then worked my way to 800 and then 1000.

I then used my air compressor and a blow gun blow the dust and crap off the wheel.

Next, use a tack free cloth to wipe off anything the air gun didn't get to.

Now you're ready to paint. Dupli-Color sells special wheel paint. No spray guns, just a few rattle cans. I bought 2 cans of paint and 2 cans of clear. I just did very light coats, letting the paint dry to a tack in the sun, then rotating the wheel 90 degrees, and doing the same thing again. Probably 7-10 very light coats. I'd rather many light coats vs 2 or 3 heavy coats with runs and drips. After the wheel is well covered in pretty silver paint, apply the clear.

I took my time with this and laid 3-5 coats of nice light coats again. Let this dry over night.

The next morning, check the wheels for imperfections etc. I let my wheels cure for 24 hours and put a light coat of wax on them. If you have some orange peel or fish eye, you can gently use some rubbing compound to fix this, but not too hard as the clearcoat is still curing.

I found this to last for a while. I just wash the wheels with soap and water, sometimes if they're really dirty, I use a weak solution of water and simple green (10:1) and clean the wheels. WHen you wax your car, go ahead and put a light coat on the wheels too. This helps protect the clearcoat. (On painted wheels, such as W126 14 and 15" Aluminum wheels).

Car washes use pressure washers and acids to clean wheels, they call it many things. Wheel Cleaner, Wheel Brightener, Wheel Brite, etc. Its acid. I dont take my vehicles to car washes anyway, but pay attention next time you go. When they're prepping the car to be loaded in the conveyer, note they're holding 2 things. 1. the Pressure washer, 2. another smaller hose attachment. Thats the wheel acid.

This is what eats your finish off the wheels, as well as the commercially available cleaners from the auto parts store. I don't care how safe they claim to be. Nothing's safer than soap and water or a diluted simple green.

Excellent work Tyl on your posts First class wheel refinishing

I was surprised you didn't use the Dupli Color Wheel Paint vs regular Auto Body Paint.
