Spacers - w126

Anyone have any luck with 10mm spacers on a w126?

I just stole a set of AMG replica wheels with great snow tires on them, but the offset is 40, where the spec is 30. They just barely rub, so I am imagining that a 10mm spacer would be just right. Next issue is whether the increased tire size will get into the fender with the spacers installed.
The tires mounted on these wheels are Dunlop sp wintersport m3 size 235 60 16. Too big for a 300SD?

The problem is the width of the wheel..........8" is way too big for a W126. You might use the spacers and find the tire hits the fenderwell. This is almost a certainty with the 235's........too big for a W126.

That is NOT the answer I was looking for....but, alas, the one I feared I would get.

Seems like I have a set of wheels and tires for sale....

With the stock 7" wheels and proper offset, a 225 tire gets as close to the fenderwells as you'd ever want to have. Any wider and you'll surely hit them at some point in the suspension travel.

You have some additional space with the 37 offset...........the wheel is sitting inboard by 1/2"...........but, unfortunately, the 8" wheel kills that benefit.........it eats up the 1/2" that you just gained.

The additional width of the 235's will probably seal your fate............

I have 245 17's on my SEC. Wouldn't they be wider? I have not had any problem with mine.

I ran into so much conflicting info about what would fit and what wouldn't, that I decided to take a chance with these. Would actually rather have 15" wheels, but the price was ridiculously low, so I bought them with fingers crossed. 5 hole AMG replicas made in Italy (FOMB ?) with very decent winter tires, under $200..... They look great on the car, but it really helps if the car can roll after you put your new wheels on (actually haven't even tried the rears, figured I would have issues with the tie rods before anything else)

unrelated note - are we going to see you on the 6'th? Would be a real pleasure to meet you in person.

The reason the info is conflicting is the multitude of variables and the fact that we're taking a shot with the variables from behind the computer screen.

The only sure way to know is to try it. What part of the wheel is hitting the vehicle (presuming the rim is hitting the tie rod end)?? If you found a spacer that just barely allowed the rim to clear the tie rod, the tire might just barely clear the fenderwell...........and won't hit the fenderwell on all but the most egregious of jounces.

I'm unsure about the 6th..........have plans in Manhattan on most weekends.

Agreed, especially with an aftermarket wheel.

Yes, the tie rod ends, by a couple millimeters....

I might try making some spacers, about 10mm, just to see if there will be issues with the fenders. Put the car on the lift, insert temp spacer, turn wheel to stops. Maybe even adjust the steering stops, although I really love the turning radius. Of course the suspension geometry will change radically with weight on the car, but trying it in the air first seems like the safer course of action.

btw - traffic foiled my attempt today at running 70 up the hill past Sikorsky...

I'd use the smallest possible spacer in the attempt.

Personally, the combo is just too GD big..........it's totally disproportionate to the vehicle.

That hill is a challenge. The SD can hold 65. The '86 can hold 70. The '87 can barely hold 62. Go figure.

Yeah.....I think it's time to try to swap with someone who has what I need and whats what I've got.....they are ungodly big, a full 3" taller and 1 1/2" wider than the 14" combo

I was at 65 all the way up, but was not at full throttle. I also was up around 75 at the base of the hill, and had to get out of it as I started climbing.

I've decided to put 215-65-15's on the SD. Probably will use the Michelin Harmony tires..........can't get the Primacy in that size.
