195 65 14 tires on a W123, anyone?

Anyone know if it is a good idea to run 195 65 14 tires on a w123 300cd. I'm sure they will fit no problem, just wondered if there would be a difference with the handling and ride of the vehicle.

I have 4 michelins in my shed that have a lot of tread left and I would like to get the most out of them.

what size do you have now? I went back to stock size on my 420sel after some wider tires and can actually feel a difference in handling.

Should be okay, but check the date code, if it's too old you may not want to trust them.

I bought them for my wife's car about 4 years ago, so should be good.

I'll give them a try.

195/65-14 is a SMALLER tire than the specified 195/70-14

Why would you do that? If you say "lowrider," well that's ok I suppose.

I just have 4 michelins with real good tread left on them that I wouldn't mind getting the use of.

If it makes the car look ridiculous or has an adverse effect on the handling then I'll replace them.

I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes.

lol those will look like the tires that come stock on a kia..

I'd expect tons of tire squeal while attempting to make any kind of turn at medium speed

What's the date code?
The 65 is the aspect ratio, not as far off as you may think.

I could not find the date on the tires. There was a small oval on the sidewall where I think the date code is normally displayed, but there was no code there.

^^Which means they're older than you think. Pay your money, take your chances.

Did you check both sides of the tires for the codes?
Otherwise, my main issue with going to 65s is how much the smaller diameter will increase engine revs and reduce fuel economy at highway speeds, as well as create some speedometer error.
I just mounted a new set of 195-70R14 Michelins on my spare set of bundt-rims. They're eventually going to replace the oversize 205-70/14 Firestones that came with my '82 240D. I'm wondering myself how the Michelins will perform. Though they are supposedly the correct size, they're more than an inch smaller diameter than the Firestones.

Happy Motoring, Mark
