Wheel offset 35mm/41mm/47mm etc.??

Will someone please clarify the difference between a 35mm wheel offset as compared to a 41mm wheel offset? Does the 35mm offset mean that the wheel is more negative or positive as compared to the 41mm offset? Does negative offset (the more of it being negative) mean that the wheel will sit under the wheel well more or sit out from under the wheel wheel more? .Does Positive offset mean that the wheel will stick out further from the wheel well (the more of it being positive)? This will clarify a discussion amongst a group of guys once and for all. Smaller number in mm = negative/ larger number in mm= positive or the other way around? I know that this is very basic for a lot of you guys but a correct answer is very helpful.

Thanks for your time
Phillip

This should help visualize things for both offset and wheel width effects.

This site does the same thing for tire width and diameters.

The tire rack banner in the 'wheels' sub forum also has a good discussion with diagrams and pictures.
