Wheels? W124 300D 1987

Hi,
I am looking for new wheels but are unsure what size to go.

Currently i have some other 16' Mercedes rims? and originally had 15'

my current tyre size is 215 55 r16, i have no idea what offset the rims are.

Does any one have experience on what will and wont from other models?

Peace and blessings Howie

124s are very forgiving as far as newer model rim fitment. you have a lot more choices because most all later model wheels will fit. any 129, 208, 210 or 203 rim will work.

the 10 hole 16 inch rims from a 210 can be found on craigslist in almost any large city, usually for $200 or less and sometimes even with decent tires.

Yes you're 5x112mm.

16foot x 7.5foot would be large rims. More likely 16", ...

The original 15-hole wheels were 15x6.5 ET49. The '90-up wheels ET48, and '94/'95 8-hole were ET44.

The 500E wore 16x8 wheels, I believe ET34 (there's a thread on it somewhere), I'm running 16x8 on my '95 with no clearance issues but note that the later 124s had rolled fenders.

Hi Jeff,
i appreciate ur post, sorry about the inch and foot thing being an Aussie i have trouble out of metric. LOL

Is "ET" the off set?

I have been happy with the 16" 215/55 the ride has been fine but the tyres are $323ea.

17"s are much cheaper so i am looking on the web for mags and tyres that will keep my cost down or considering going to 17" rims to get my tyre cost down.

Ouch, those are some pricey tires.

Here: 16x8 ET40 Fit 124 (photos) is a thread about 124 wheels/tires, I'm running the 16x8 ET40 without modifications and without rubbing on a stock '95 E320 (W124) but the last post has a link to a previous discussion about 16x8 ET34 (yes ET is the offset in mm) being stock 500E wheels and also fitting. I am extremely happy with the fit of the ET40 wheels getting the tires in as far as possible and the stable steering geometry that results, but it is a tight fit to the strut, ... slightly less ET would allow more flexibility in tire sizes. The 17 should be the same, 17x8 with ET 34 should leave clearance for 225s IMO.

H jeff,
your post has helped me no end, now i know my max off set it 40, this with the information that profile is percentage of 205mm i can calculate the total road wheel diameter for all rim sizes.

Do you think the back may handle an off set of 43?

God bless you and yours for your help to me, like wise to the other posters.

The back will IMO handle 8" ET43 with ease. The front is the difficult part, 8" ET43 doesn't leave enough clearance for rim-weights, you will have to use the stick-on type, and some 225s will rub the strut / some will not so you're looking at possibly having to drop to a 215, ... which really puts you into 7.5" wide rims on the front. For 8" ET34, the 500E had different flares front and rear and could handle the offset change although it must have a slightly detrimental effect on the straight-line stability on uneven pavement (changes the steering axis offset). Fender spacers are one solution discussed here for that setup on the front with the 300E/E320/E420 fenders.

I have hear of lots of people using spaces but it is new to me.
If i had and ET50 rim and 7mm spacer would it give me the same inner clearance as an ET43 and the outer clearance the same as a ET57 rim?

And i guess they are machined rings with bolt holes that go between the disc rotor and the road wheel /mag?

If they are like this do people need longer bolts?
