Bulge in sidewall

I have standard Michelin Harmony tires on my '85 and I just discovered a very small bulge in the right rear tire's sidewall when inspecting something.

Tires are not new, they were on the car when I bought it from the PO.

Does this mean the tire is toast? Do I definitely need to replace in pairs?

It's not good and should be replaced quickly - a high speed sidewall blowout could cause you to loose control. The buldge is a result of an internal failure in the tire, maybe in construction but most likely it was curbed pretty hard once. Be safe and replace it - We want to keep hearing from you on the forum

Do i have to replace in a pair or should I get another single michelin harmony?

The tires are used of course, but not too much. Im not experienced enough with tires to say how much % of tread is left. Im guessing this is a pairs thing.

At least for the moment I'll put a tire i've got kickin around on it. I want to be posting on here for a long time too.

If you can match it, buy one. Unless they are all old and therefore of un-known safety.

Look at the date-code on the sidewalls and determine the age. Also, if the Michelin is fairly new (by date-code) there might be some warranty (not sure of that on passenger-car tires).

date code indicates 10th week of '03. Id assume they are firmly out of warranty at this point. I know the car sat in the same spot for at least two years before i bought it in 8/07.

so its not a requirement to match tread wear conditions on the same axle?

ive done so much work on my 123s, but never given any thought to tires.

Replacing in pairs is ideal, but if you have a decent amount of tread left, go with one.
The tire stores will say replace all tires six years old, your call.

Dan, if all 4 tires are the same age it would be a good idea to replace all four. Tires and brakes are two safety-related items that it's best to maintain properly.
