These two nice cars (Manila Beige 300D and S124) are owned by Patrick (MBeige).

Pix like these always remind me of the folks who buy an old clapped-out junker and immediately spring for a set of fancy chrome wheels. It screams "old car with new wheels." If you like it, of course that is your business, it's your car. But I think it looks cheap, tacky, ruins the appearance of an otherwise classic car design.

Not good. Especially hideous on the W115.

Wow, some of you guys really have a serious hatred for these wheels.

I personally think they look great on the w123s. I looked for these for a long time and am happy I found a set.

Yup, me too. If I hadn't found some steelies and hubcaps I'd have probably gone that route since finding Pentas is like finding the proverbial needle.

Sorry, but those combo's kind of trip my "wrong-o" alarm...

They look appropriate on the 124 wagon and second best on the 123 wagon but for some reason, I can't get on board with the 123, 115 sedans... Generally, I don't care for more than five spokes on a wheel but there are exceptions to every rule.

I'm never comfortable casting aspersions on someone's pride and joy so the usual disclaimer applies:

"If you like the way it looks, enjoy it!"

there were two kinds of clk wheels for each width--ones that weighed 16-17lbs each, and light ones that were 12-14lbs each (we've had different weights reported for the light ones).

that means they are 2" larger in diamter than bundt wheels (or 1" larger than the 15" bundts), and between 1" and .5" wider than cookie cutter vintage bundts. decreased weight+larger size. that's a winner to me for an underpowered old diesel car.

and as for tacky, if you think they look tacky, i'm sure you also feel the same way about the old bundt wheels, since the new ones were modelled after the vintage ones. right?

yeah. there you go--someone who knows a thing or two about w123's and likes them like me. haha, cool!

about the hatred: it's not a hatred for the wheels. it's a hatred for anything new on a vintage benz. in other words you can't improve on a w123, or you can't improve on what mercedes did. i disagree with all these sentiments. if the w201--the most over-engineered chassis Mercedes ever made, and quite possibly the greatest Mercedes of all time--can be improved upon, then so can the w123. let's not forget the w123 was a middle of the line auto...

amg pentas aren't that easy to come by, i agree. i have a set on my 85 190e 2.3. it has a zender kit on it, so i wanted to get a period set of wheels. if i could find some zender turbos here in the states, i would take the pentas off the w201 and put them on my w123

i agree with your conclusion. by the way the modern bundts on your black benz would make it go much faster. not on the deuce, though why do you have one of those anyway? did you buy it from a military surplus auction? my battle buddy once fell out of a deuce while jumping out of it. she fell, like, right on her face while wearing a kevlar. hahahaaaa

also the zender turbos, kinda look like the wheels on your vette

i don't think that applies in my case. i found myself a nice vintage w123--a california car with no major exterior issues other than some fading of the paint in non-obvious places, and some bubbling of paint due to rust in all the usual places. if my car was a rust-heap and looked dilapidated, that would be a different issue. but in this case i'm putting some nice newer bundt wheels, which actually resemble the original wheels for this car, onto a cosmetically good condition car.

in a sense i'm keeping with the vintage of the car, while also improving its performance in a way no one can disagree with. as i said, lighter wheels, wider footprint. that's actually my main goal. the looks are secondary, but personally i like them.

but becuase you said that, when you're not looking, i'm going to come put a fresh set of clk's with brand new tires on your w123. after a week, we'll see if they don't grow on you

I'm not sure why we are debating this. Personally, I don't like the look of newer wheels on older cars; they just don't look correct to me. However, if you like them on your cars, have a ball.
