all season tires for 300D

What would you recommend for all season tires for a 1984 300D? We don't need snows because we have a 1997 ML320 for the heavy stuff. Thanks.

I believe that you have 195/70/14s on your car. I would say Toyo 800 Ultra. Treadepot.com has them going for $42 each, with a 100k mile warranty, and a 3000 mile test drive. Goto toyo.com for more info on these tires.

TireRack has great tires as well, and would looking at them as well. However for the price, your not going to get into high performance, they are more touring sized, so get the best touring tire out there.

I would say try the Avid series of tires from Yokohama. I've never tried them myself but I've heard only good things about them. Member's Mike Tangas and Aaron (Greenberg) have posted that their Avid's are great. I think Mike and Aaron have the H4 or T4's but I would resommend the Avid Touring because of it's 80,000 mile treadlife warranty and the fact Tirerack.com rates it generally a bit better then the T4 and H4. The Avid Touring has an S speed rating (up to 112 mph) which is more then any stock 300D will reach. I also like Pirelli's P400 Touring tires but they don't score as well as the Avid Touring's and have only a 65,000 mile treadwear warranty.

I'm not familar with the Toyo 800 Ultra's but Toyo makes damn good tires at great prices just like Yokohama. Toyota selected Toyo Poxes J33 as the oem tire for the 2002 Camry, so you know Toyo makes quality tires.

I've bought three sets of the Yokohama Avid H4s. One set went on my '83 300D (since sold), another set is on my '93 300E 2.8 and finally I have a set on my '70 280SE (the daily driver). I have been quite pleased (as you might detect), although I have noticed they are slightly noisy, especially on the 280SE. They track well in wet weather and allow for some slightly aggressive driving on dry roads. On my 300SD (also sold), I first had Michelin Energy MXV4s, which I liked but was not impressed by their treadwear life (and I DID rotate them on schedule and I DID keep the car in perfect alignment). I replaced them with Bridgestone Turanza H Revos and found them to be the best tire in wet weather (received a AA wet traction rating on the tests), but they weren't as quiet or smooth as the MXV4s. When I bought the 300D, it needed new gumballs, so I opted to try out the Yokos and found them to be great value for the money. I only have 2,700 miles on the set on the 280SE, so I will report how well they do on wear. Keep in mind that the front end of the 280SE will need to be rebuilt come springtime, so if there is premature wear, that's why.

The price breakdown is as follows:

Yokohama Avid H4: $46/ea
Michelin Energy MXV4: $104/ea
Bridgestone Turanza H Revo: $71/ea

Nobody has mentioned the SP Sport A2 yet which would be a very good choice also.

he SP Sport A2 is Dunlop's High Performance All-Season radial designed to compromise the least on all-season high performance while delivering the greatest value. The SP Sport A2 is designed to blend long treadwear, responsive handling and dependable traction on dry roads, wet roads and even in light snow.

On the outside, the SP Sport A2 molds an innovative dual-phase tread compound into a mildly
asymmetric tread design that features outside shoulder blocks with minimal siping to enhance steering response and cornering stability while the inside shoulder blocks feature more sipes to provide the additional biting edges to aid traction in foul weather. The SP Sport A2 radial's 3-rib center contact patch is designed to enhance dry, wet and light snow traction during acceleration, braking and cornering. The entire tread design features Dunlop's "CHAOS" pitch sequencing of tread block shapes and sizes to help reduce noise to increase comfort. On the inside, the SP Sport A2 features twin, high-density steel belts reinforced by Dunlop's JointLess Band nylon to enhance driving control and provide long, even treadwear while minimizing weight and enhancing ride quality. Additionally, hard rubber bead fillers and a high ply turn-up enhance steering response and cornering stability.

195/70-14 ... $51.00
45,000 mile warranty

Luke

I just got a set. They seem to be quiet and handle nicely. Plenty of traction for all raging 123 HP.

The warranty is 50K miles btw.
