Unhappy Painted wheels....What Happened???

I just got finished bragging how good the wheels on my '86 560 SL looked after painting them. Today , while rinsing the car with plain water the paint started flaking off(The car was cold).
About a month earlier I had lightly sanded, scrubbed and cleaned the wheels before putting several coats of DUPLICOLOR STEEL WHEEL FINISH spray paint onto the wheels, followed by a few days later with their clear coat.
Now the wheels look horrible. I don't want to repeat the process again for this to happen all over. Any ideas would be appreciated. Is there a place out there that does this professionally?

I am getting ready to try the Griots Garage Kit: Paint Prep Spray, Zinc Spray Primer, (2) Silver Metalic Spray, (2) non-yellowing Clear Coat spray-$59.00. I and others have a feeling the above is made by Wurth in Germany.

I have cleaned and sanded my wheels and will be doing the above- I will let you know how it turns out.

Did you let the coats dry long enough in between? Did you prep and zinc prime? I have seen Duplicolor in Wal Mart but have never tried it.

Body shops sand blast (walnut shells are best) and paint/clear coat from $75.00-$200.00 per wheel!

Hi James,

If you can let me know your results. I didn't prime with a zinc coat. Where do you get the paint kit you're describing?

www.griotsgarage.com

Do a netscape search if this is the wrong URL. I have the phone number and catalog at work if you need me to scan it and send to you.

www.motorhead.net - has the Wurth products.

Wheel refinishing

I just picked up a set of bundt cake wheels for my older benz and what a cleanup job. I'd swear that the lube man greased the wheels just to be sure the customer got his money's worth of grease!
Any way I got them pretty clean now. I've seen on the threads about several paints but I'm thinking of the walnut shell bead blasting and just a clear coat over clean or brushed (satin finish)alloy. What do ya think? Anyone done this?

I found a new company that sells a "high performance wheel coating".

It is found on the front page of the www.europeancarweb.com website. This is the website for european car magazine.

They appear to have a webiste www.duplicolor.com

Painting Wheels...

Unfortunately, anything done with aerosols is delicate. You can make them look gorgeous, but you don't have the advantages of the catalysts that you can use if you're spraying them. Don't sandblast them unless they're extremely nasty....it roughs up the aluminum enough that you need a bunch of primer to level 'em out. I normally glass bead blast them in a cabinet, prime them with some good self-etching primer (I use Sherwin Williams....nasty looking OD green stuff) and then either topcoat them with single stage or bc/cc urethane. If you don't have equipment to spray them, you're probably better off prepping them perfectly and having a shop spray them. Should save you some money and get a LOT more durable finish.
