240D Aluminium Rims

I have read on a few threads about the Aluminium rims used on the 240D. some say the are lighter and will make the car seem to handle better over the steel rims.

I have seen them from time to time in PNP and thought about grabbing a few, but wasn`t sure if it was worth it.

Today I was at PNP, and there is a 83 240 with Aluminium rims. the spare has never been on the car, not a speck of road grime any where, and the lug holes still have the factory paint on them. Iam only interested in the rim and not the tire even if it is new old stock from 1983. PNP said I would have to buy the tire as well as the rim because it is a new tire.

The 4 on the car look to have been well used over the years, but will know better when the dirt is brushed off to get a good look. this looked to have been thrown out behind the barn for quite a while. mold, moss etc.... dirt that looks to have been on it forever, and oak leaves caked on it and other debris.
Steel wheel $5, Aluminium wheel $25. tire $14. Bring the tire back and will get $14 credit. It looks like a steel wheel, doubt they will check on that.

So is it really worth it to swap over to the Aluminium rims?

Charlie

They are worth it imho but I recommend getting a guarantee they are straight because they are very easy to bend.

I recently bought two from a salvage yard. I bought two "steel" wheels , and they didn't check. You can play dumb. THey look like steel wheels afterall. I doubt they check. I'm looking for two more. Many times you'll see them on cars without a transmission or brakes...Not sure how to remove the wheels in that case.

Check to see if they are 6.5 or 7.0 inch version.

Less unsprung weight is always better. Depends on how rough your roads are locally. Lots of deep potholes I might not use them. They are just not as strong as steel rims and these cars are heavy.

Don't know all the reasons they were used on the 240Ds but the main advantage would be improved ride-control due to reduction of unsprung-weight.
Many years ago, I replaced the worn-out cast-iron front brake-drums on my 1961 Ponton 180, with aluminum drums from an early Fintail, and in addition to better braking, there was a noticeable improvement in the ride.

They make the car ride so sweet and the steering is pin sharp. Best used with the correct orignal 175r14 tires which are nigh onto unobtainalbe now.

I am running 195/70r14s on mine.

I disagree to swap my aluminium from the steel rims. There are disadvantages of aluminium rims. Yes they will make your car faster, but aluminium rims are easily are malleable.

My latest 240D came with oversized, underinflated, dry-rotted 10-year-old Firestones, mounted on Bundt-rims. The ride was great but cornering was lousy. Replacing those with 195/70R14 Michelin Xs way improved steering response, at the expense of a stiff ride. Replacing the PO's rusty old KYBs with Bilsteins restored the nice ride. I still prefer the matching, painted hubcaps on these cars, but not enough to dump the Bundts.

The bundts are four pounds heavier and even with the hubcaps make a significantly heavier setup....detectable with the butt meter? ...yes.

I have for sale: 4x 14" light aluminum rims (with hub caps) mounted with 170 SR 14 tires with less than 3000 miles on them. They are from my 240D which is now a parts car due to rust. Engine runs strong also for sale w 220K.

My, new to me, 5 spd TD came with bundts which I've swapped for aluminum rims. The handling is a tad ''lighter" and I also prefer the "painted to match" wheel covers.

I am pretty sure those are 5.5" rims. Perhaps you meant you had four of them. Surely the tires are not 170s are they?

If I could come up with a decent set of factory-painted navy-blue hubcaps for this 240D, I'd be tempted. A few years ago, I wemt to wash my first Ivory 240D one day and the garden hose (Not a pressure-washer) took all the Ivory paint off one of my pretty hupcaps!
I also have a set of 14" alloy rims that came off a '78 280CE in the Pick-N-Pull, but they're obviously from a later '80s Benz of some type. They're the flat center style with little capsule-shaped holes around the perimiter, and deep sockets for the lug-bolts. I like the look of those better than the Bundts, plus they're much easier to clean. I wonder how much those weigh?
I saw the same style rims on a late '80s 190E, but those were 15 inch.
