T rating OK for 300sd instead of H?
Other than the max speed, is there a diff between T and H.

According to this site there is a difference in speed rating
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=35 I guess a T rating would be OK but if that differs from the recommended value you may have insurance implications in the event of an accident. What does your owner's manual say? You will probably find that the load ratings will be different of a "slower" tyre so check that too - same link gives information about that too. |

H rated tire is 130mph, T rated is 118mph. I'd say your SD should just fine with "T" rated tires, as Army said, the only thing to watch for is load rating changing drastically. But I'm not sure there is any correlation between the speed rating and load rating.

I don't think there is a correlation between load and speed rating - I think it is more likely to be a manufacturer's decision - like this is a van tyre so it needs to be strong but it won't go fast... That's the impression I've got anyway.

Thanks, I wanted Mich hydro edge for my 300sd but the tire store guy said I have to have H and they only come in T. Trying to decide what to do.

TireRack says:
H-rating 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes T-rating 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans The SD falls more under family sedan than sport sedan by a long shot. The speed difference is 12MPH. Unless you will be driving over 110mph for long periods of time, there is no reason to not go with the "T" rated tire. No way the load rating is appreciably different between the H/T. The SD only weights 3500lbs which is nearly identical to a new Ford Taurus. There is nothing to worry about with a T rated tire. The Mich Hydroedge is also a fantastic tire you will not be disappointed.

The speed rating is for operation at sustained speed, at rated load.
If you're not exceeding the load rating, and not exceeding the speed rating, shouldn't be a problem. Tire stores sometimes get funny about installing tires with a lower speed rating than the OE, claim it's liability, ... as if they're going to be sued if the tread separates when you're driving a sustained 130mph in your SD.

I decided to go with the Mich Pilot Exalto A/S H instead of the Hydro T.
