Tirerack tire buying experience

Last week I purchased a set of Yokohama AVS db tires (195 65 15) from Tirerack. I received them yesterday and had them mounted. Best tire purchasing experience I have ever had. Cost to mount was $12/tire and this included the $2/tire disposal fee. Oh yea the tires are great. I took it (the E320) out on the freeway today just to try them out and ohhh what an experience. At 80 mph all I hear now is a little wind noise.

My experience with TireRack has been nothing less than very positive. Luke was most helpful and the new wheels (AMG Monoblocks) and tires (Dunlop SP 5000 205/55/16) have dramatically improved the ride of the car. The wheels/tires arrived as promised. In addition, the price for the wheels was less than as advertised because of the Dollar/Mark exchange rate. I would certainly buy from them again.

So, is the advantage gained one of product selection? Or is it price, even with shipping and separate mounting charges?

I would have guessed if you just wanted a commonly available tire it would be cheaper to buy locally. I can see buying online and having them shipped if you want something not easily available locally.

Or, are you going to come out ahead on both product selection and price?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Selection and price. I was unable to find the Yok tires in the local area and the price was right - including shipping. The same size/speed rating for the Michelin tire (at Sams Club) was $140/each - mounted. Total price for the Yok came in at $87.75/each so the savings came in at around $64/tire. The $87.75/tire does include mounting. Also, the Michelin tires do not have the treadwear rating that the Yok tires do.

I’m a very satisfied costumer of Tire Rack, as well!!

I purchased my last set of tires…Dunlop’s Z rated in Jun this year. No problem, at all.

Great help with everything!! … including my non-US delivery address and non-US credit card clearance…

Regards

Ricardo

I've bought tires from Tirerack since the late 80's and found their prices to be excellent and Luke's information to be excellent. When asked, and if local companies have the same tire, they'll match the Tire Racks prices including shipping. I usually prefer to buy locally, but wish to support this site. So, I buy from Tire Rack and have them ship to my local tire guy and he mounts them with installation guarantees! Roger

Ken300D,

It is all of those items mentioned. In my case, I could have gotten the very same tire locally (Yokohama Avid Touring). I bought from TireRack any way. I had the tires mounted, balnaced and torqued for $10.00 a throw at a local Indie tire shop. Now here is the kicker, cost per tire plus shipping plus balance/mounting came out to a savings of almost $20.00 per tire had I gone to the tire store in town. That is an $80 savings on one set of tires, a great deal if you ask me.

I've bought from Tirerack since before I was into MB....pretty much since I've been into cars period. Always had top notch service and product results. The only trick can be finding a good shop to do the mount/balance/etc once they arrive. Nail that down and you are golden...

Hope this helps,
Lee

PS ask for Luke...

I did tires by mailorder a few years ago. Was easy and pleasant experience. Can't remember the company.

Issue that came up with me was the need to rotate (I usually do my own if I have to pay for it) and rebalance (someone else does this locally) ... seemed to work out, over about a 25k mile timeframe to be a wash, but with much less labor (jacking and rotating is not nearly so cool to me as fixing mechanical issues or changing fluids!).

Am I missing something? Seems a company could do special order for someone without a national chain store with lifetime mount and balance, amortized, at about the same price?

Nothing but Kudos to Luke and Tirerack. I've used them for my MBZ and two Astro vans. They drop ship to a local shop (Wheel Techniques) where I have then installed and balanced. Price? There are a couple other shops in the area that'll match Tirerack's price, but: (1) Our sales tax is 8%, and (2) they typically don't stock the high-perf tires. Sales tax alone typically pays the shipping.
