Aluminum alloy rims and 1 low tire pressure
I have 4 aluminum alloy rims(on Ford Escape) and just 1 tire is always low. Drops 10psi per day (24 hrs).
I bought the current tire from a large tire store here in town. I took the car in, and told the that just this tire is always low. They looked for a leak from the tire and found none put a new valve stem put 'rim sealer' and said it is fixed!!! This was a couple of weeks ago. Once again just 1 tire is low, the same one. Am I wrong to think, that there is something wrong with the rim, and not the tire. Can the rim be repaired? Bob 240 D, but problem is with the Ford Escape |

Bob, a leak that large should be easy to see in a "dunk tank". What exactly did the tire store do to look for the leak?
It's certainly possible that a damaged wheel is causing the leak. Damage that a pothole or a hard curb hit could cause. Have the tire store check the runout (that the wheel is round & true) and redo the road force balance.

I agree, I think the problem is with the wheel. It might be cracked or chipped on a part of the wheel's edge where the tire mates. It can be very hard to tell just by looking at the wheel, so you will need to have it professionally tested.

I agree with Luke. It happened to me before, if I move the valve stem a little bit to the side it would hiss out the air I just pumped in. Replaced it with a new one under warranty and all is well.
There was a recall a few years back about defective valves that caused blowouts (and ultimately, accidents).

I would ask
that they swap tires if they won't give you a new one. Just pull two wheels off and swap, marking the suspect wheel. The shop is only out labor at this point. If the wheel continues to lose air, then you know, if not, it's the tire and they should replace it. The Escape is likely too new to have the wheel turn porous and leak air and you would really have to nail something to damage the wheel. You would likely remember the contact.
