Bob.
Front right hand wheel. 60k miles & no problems. They have been taken off a couple of times & there doesnt appear to be any issues. I dont know if ford rims in the USA would work. These do.

([Width x Aspect Ratio x 2] / 25.4) + Wheel Diameter For a 195/70/14 that would be ([195 x .7 x 2] / 25.4) + 14 = 24.74" and for a 225/60/14 that would be ([225 x .6 x 2] / 25.4) + 14 = 24.63" Yeah that sounds about right. 30mm wider means 15mm more on each side and 15mm / 25.4mm per inch = .59"

Though the fact that they are steel wheels actually helps - they'll be more resistant to the off-center lug bolts "wallowing out" the tapered holes in the wheels... If the stock bundts on my car are 5.5" wide as others have more or less said, then I think the 225's should be OK. The wheels are 139.7 mm wide - which means they are over 62% the width of the tread. Seems like I recall the old "rule of thumb" being that the wheels need to be at least 60% as wide as width of your tires.

I know some tires have printed on them what are the minimum & max rim sizes. I thought 225's needed at least 6" rims.
I agree with you about alloy rims & needing them to be an exact match. Its too easy for them to crack. The ford rims went on one Sunday afternoon after 2 punctures in an hour. They worked so they stayed.

So the 225s should be OK on the 5.5" wheels. Maybe not ideal, and it might cause slightly accelerated wear in the center of the tread, but they should still be OK.

Bob,
I agree that they shouldnt be a problem for you. You would think when they put the specs together they would have erred on the side of caution, so I would expect that 1/2" under on rim size should be ok. I can remember as a teenager having some horrible combinations on some of the old cars we had. It used to be a case of if you can get it on the rim, keep your fingers crossed. Cant remember ever having a failure from a mismatch. We used to drive under some shocking conditions as well. Good Luck !!

If I were wanting to run 225s on my car I would find some 6.5" bundts. If the tire rubs you can slip in a 5 mm spacer.
I think I have four spare 6.5" bundts if anybody needed some I would sell reasonable depending on condition. The 225s on the 5.5 rim will pull the sidewalls around and not all of the tread will contact the pavement. I had a set of 225/50 r 14 hoosiers mounted on my 5.5" bundts for a while on my 280e autocrosser.

Why go up like that? Added unsprung weight is just going to harm handling and performance in every way, and for what?
As another poster said, these arent race cars. I try to go for H rated tires bacuase I like the stiffer sidewall, not because Im going to use the higher speed rating (many folks dont understand that sped rating effects handling too). So go for a quality tire in OE size and call it a day.
