300E Yokohama Avid vs. Michelin Pilots

OK, thanks for all the input. Managed to work my way up the chain at NTB, and here's what they offered (see my prior post):

Alignment, 4 tires, balance, stems, mount, road hazard, disposal, tax, etc:

205/60/15 Yokohama Avid H4: $193.99
195/65/15 Michelin Pilot XGT H4: $326.90
205/60/15 Michelin Pilot XGT H4 $379.17

They are giving me 2/3 the current price of my old tires, free mounting, balance, valvestems, disposal. I pay for a new alignment (I need it anyway...).

The district manager says I'll be much happier with the Michelins...

Which way should I go... which way should I go...

for the 300E?

I put the 205/60/15 XGT V4 (not H) on my '94 E320 and they were just great. Car was absolutely stable with the wider foot print but you may notice that there's more 'drag' since the footprint is wider.

Can't comment on the Yokos but they been highly rated by others on this forum.

the 205s are the Sportline size tire, and a good feel and fit on your car. I have used both the Michelin XGT V4 and H4 on another car (Acura Legend Coupe 5 spd) and on that car they were pretty close. Pretty good life span and performance, good wet performance. I have the XGT V4 on my 300E and the Yoko AVS dB on my C class. The dB is almost as good in the handling dept as the Michelin, but a lot more quiet and comfortable. It is about $12/tire more than the Avid H4, according to tire rack, and is a V rated tire. I would personally prefer V rated on a heavier car that does any sustained hiway driving.

You don't say what kind of weather you drive in, or what you want out of the tire besides longevity, but if it were mine, I would try to get them to give me the Yoko AVS dB in 205/60Vr15. I would pay up to $15 more per tire for the option. Much more quiet and comfortable than the Michelin, and comparable performance. Life span is unknown to me at this time on the Yokos, but the reviews on tirerack at the banner above should have info. They will be what I install on my 300E when the Michelins wear out!

If they won't do it, I would normally go for the Michelin XGT HR15 in 205 - It possibly isn't as quiet as the Yoko Avid, but is a solid performer and has decent tread life. I am not sure that it is worth the $185 dollar premium over the Avids, however.

I would second the Yokohama AVS Db, which I recently put on my daughter's '88 420SEL (a very heavy car) and have been very pleased with them -- V-rated and extremely quiet.

Shipped from Tire Rack (they were in short supply this summer) and installed by my local guy. Great value for the money.

I too have the Yoko AVS dB in 205/60Vr15 on my '87 300E. Great tire so far except I got a flat a couple days ago but had it replaced today. Really quiet on the open road while provided pretty good cornerning/grip. I highly recommend them.

I say for the money, the Avid H4s are the way to go. I've bought three sets of them (300E, 300D and 280SE). I have since sold the 300E and the 300D, but I've racked up about 5,000 miles on the set on my '70 280SE and they're great tires for the price. Very quiet and the car exhibits great handling, even in pretty wet weather. Since the 280SE is a well-balanced car, I am not going to put snow tires on it, so I'll be interested to see how the Avids do in the winter. Will report back after the first big snow.

I just recently went from Michelins to the Yoko AVS db tires on my E320 and am quite impressed with the quietness, ride and handling.

I vote Yoko AVD db V rated. Simply outstanding in every way on my 560SL! I believe the V rating gives an extra margin of safety for heavy cars in hot weather.

Yokos give me everything Michelins do EXCEPT:
Noise
A French legacy
The cute baby ads
Money in my pocket

I realize the post is vs. Pilots, but FWIW, I have brand new Yoko AVS dbs on my 300TE and Michelin MXV4s on my 300E.

The Yokos are quieter and have more cornering grip. I suspect they'll wear out faster though.

When the the 300E needs tires, it's going to get Yoko AVS dbs.

I couldn't be happier with the Yokos.
