Anyone ever had alloys polished to a high shine? I am thinking about having my Carlsson 1/6 wheels polished. Chrome is just too delicate for the winters.
I checked with www.rennsport.com (they dont return all emails) they say the polished wheel can not be clear-coated. www.wheeltechniques.com state they can do a clear powder-coat to protect after polishing. However, www.wheelcollision.com and a few other shops state they clear-coat the wheels after polishing. Anybody have any experience or know the truth about polishing wheels & clear-coats. I want them to be have some protection from road salt, brake dust, etc. |

Kevin,
I don't know about the others but to the degree of shine that Rennsport polishes wheels the clearcoat (or any paint for that matter) will not stick very well. Perhaps will less of a polish or a short paint life expectancy the polish + clearcoat will work. The Rennsport polish approximates chrome. The factory MB polish is shiny metal but nowhere near. You can paint the shiny metal level of polishing but not the near chrome that Rennsport does. A polished, but not painted, wheel should be okay from road conditions as long as you clean it on a regular basis. Then agian, if you don't clean a painted wheel on a regular basis you are in the same boat... Hope this helps....Lee |

I just had my 16" AMG rims painted (Pearl Black, color no. 199) and polished by Wheel Techniques in Campbell, CA (I also live in Campbell). They did an excellent job. The polished lip really offsets the black center face. WT is also an approved installer for the Tirerack. I purchased tires from the Tirerack and they drop-shipped them to WT. Cost-wise, I paid $110/rim for paint and polish, $20/rim to remove old/install new tires, and a $35 lot charge for custom color paint (all told $555). As for the polished lip's longevity, I don't have any history yet, but I plan on taking great care of them. We don't have salted roads in my area, so I won't have any data on that (plus I won't drive my car in the rain -- it's a "fair-weather" vehicle). Bottom line: I think Wheel Techniques does excellent work and would recommend them to my "forum buddies". Talk to Jeff, he's the owner.

Hey Brian, where's Wheel Techniques?(street, general location) I've only seen wheel works. I live in Saratoga but my parents own Blue Sky if you've ever passed by. I'm interested in getting my rims polished. Thanks

amgkid:
Blue Sky restaurant at Winchester and Campbell? COOL! I took my family there for the first time on St. Patrick's Day. Downtown Campbell had their St. Patty's Day Festival that night, but nothing really for the kids to eat, so we ended up walking to the Blue Sky -- great food! Anyways, Wheel Techniques is just down the street. Head towards Los Gatos on Winchester. Just after you go under San Tomas and past the first light (I forget the name of the street), Wheel Techniques will be on the right. Talk to Jeff, he's the owner. In fact, I've gotta go by there on Saturday to pick up a spare set of caps he's painting for me. Further down Winchester is Los Gatos ******** -- that's the shop I take my car to (they work exclusively on MBZs; talk to Tony -- he's the owner). Funny, I just picked my car up from them yesterday -- had a new self-leveling pump installed, and 4-wheel alignment. What kind of ride do you have? Maybe we can meet in Downtown Los Gatos some time and head up to Alice's for breakfast I've only had my car a couple months and have not done the drive to Alice's in this car yet (but, many times on my Honda CBR-900RR). Sorry to all the other readers for this long-winded post, but just goes to show you what a small world this really is . amgkid -- keep reading this message board and we'll hook up this summer for a drive up Highway 9 and the infamous Skyline Highway 35 to Alice's Restaurant. Thanks for the reply, I might go check that place out soon.
As for my car, it's a midnight blue 1987 300E. I just have clear corners and a remus exhaust on it right now. My 17inch amg monoblocks should be coming in anyday now =). It's also lowered but I don't know much about that since my dad did it all. I see a lot of mercedes in Saratoga but hardly ever see 2.3-16v. I guess they are pretty rare. About Skyline, that place is really nice to drive. My next door neighbor has an m3 and we go up there all the time. A little past skyline on highway 9 there is a parking lot that has a really nice view, where we take pictures of our cars. I'll post a picture up soon. I was wondering since you just got your car recently if you put all MODs by yourself or just bought it that way? Thanks. I always like to hear of other people who upgrade their benzes. Seems like nowadays everyone has a honda civic with a 4 inch exhaust. I know most of my friends do.... hehe Phil |
