15 inch wheels on a 123 300D?

Does anyone know if any 15 inch MB wheels will fit on my '84 300D? I am looking to lower my RPM at highway speeds, and am thinking this may be a good way to go about it. What year and model car would I have to look for?

Thanks,

Greg

Thumbs up

Here is an example of a 15"x6.5" ET215 Mercedes wheel, originally from a 1988 300SE. I put this one on a few days ago while doing a brake pad replacement on the brown car next to it. These particular wheels fit the W123 better than the W124 in terms of the offset (they stick out too far on the W124), so I think the whole set will end up on the W123.

Come on, now if your going to buy new rims and tires go ahead and get 16", more traction, smoother ride, and most of all they just look much better.

Yo Adi, Thanks for your compliment, yeah thats my baby, or in your country, known as the mercy tiger..... hehheh!!

I once did had a chance to fit 16' bbs rims, but the fitting required spacers to prevent tire rubbing and steering arm rubbing on the inner-rim surface. (If I recalled correctly, spacers were almost 22mm thick!). The rims looked agressive, but the ride suffered as a result, thus back to 15' rims for me.

Cheerio!

No. Those are E-class wheels, probably from a 300E. They will not fit a W123, the offset is wrong. You can't even bolt up the ET48 E-class wheels to the front because they won't clear the steering tie-rod end. They might not bolt up to the back either, I haven't tried one. (I have a 1987 300D also, lots of wheels to try).

You have to have S-class 15-hole wheels, which are going to be ET215.

I should also mention that you have to have a completely different set of lug bolts too. I went to FastLane and got all new ones as specified for a 1988 300SE, which is the car the wheels originally went on. They are funny looking lug bolts, but are made to work and look right with these wheels.

I prefer the look of the W126's 15" wheels to the 8-hole 15"s. Now I wonder how I'm going to go at acquiring 'em. Maybe I should visit a junkyard...

I also like 16" wheels, but then again I don't think that the 8-holes look that great on the 300CD. Maybe then I can go with Z-Rated tires.. .. on a diesel that can hardly reach 100mph.. :p

Hopefully there is enough wheel upgrading and changing going on that you will see a set on EBay soon enough. The best deals are when the paint has worn a little and people get tired of them, and don't want to deal with repainting. The average set of four wheels should be in the $200 range.

While driving in this morning I just realized that I have to keep a set of the old lug bolts in the trunk in order to mount the spare tire - it is still the 14" bundt design. Doh!

When I get the chance I'll scan in the three styles of lug bolts that I'm aware of to show their differences. They are:
- for 14x6 ET25 bundt rims
- for 15x6.5 ET48 15-hole rims
- for 15x6.5 ET215 15-hole rims

The huge difference in the offset between the E-Class and S-Class 15-hole rims caused MB to provide a different lug bolt. The S-Class lug bolts have an extended bolt shaft to the head in order to make it fit flush with the outside of the wheel.

Hey Benzie - thanks for the complement man. Your camera takes a nicer picture. Mine has lower digital resolution so all the imperfections in my car can't be seen.

Yo Ken,

My friend took the pictures for me, and yeah, I am pretty proud of my benz. Your car looks pretty good too in blue.

What size tire do you use?? Mine is currently on 205 x 65, and I think it provides a pretty comfortable damped ride though the steering seems to be a little heavy....

Benzie, next time I stop in Singapore I gotta take a look at your W123!

I think I'm just going to let my current set of tires wear out and when they need replacement I'll source for 15" wheels...

I went with the 195/65R15 tires this time around. That is what's recommended by Mercedes for the 1987 300D, for example. My brother just got a 1992 300D that has 205/70R15 tires on it, and I think it makes the ride softer with little loss of real drivability. Possibly the fuel mileage might suffer ever so slightly. So, I think the larger tires are probably more appropriate for the way most of us drive where I live. Maybe on high-speed roads with curves the 195s would be better overall.

Not sure what I'll do next time around on tires - hope its a long time off.
