50 series tires on stock rims (126)?

I'm here at work with a guy who has a 126 with stock 15 in wheels who asked me if he should go with 50 series tires for a wider stance and what would be the best size. Since I'm so anal about the way my speedo, etc should read CORRECTLY, I've pretty much stuck with my 65 series (Yoko db's) in 15's when I run em stock until I put my 18's back on (with 245/40/18 rubber this spring).I don't wanna let him just go out and get some outlandish size only to screw up the ride with that tonka toy look (although I don't care for the guy personally).

Anyway, what would be the widest footprint in a 50 series tire he could get away with because I don't want to just tell him "yea get it" as far as whatever he wants to get (I don't really car for the guy too much personally, but feel for the CAR. He's just been such an A-hole and now speaks because he saw me getting out of my car this morning and talks like we're best buds now. Wouldn't like to see an innocent 126 go too pot so help me get this guy some advice... oh, did I mention I didn't care for the guy that much?
thanks

Click on the link above for the tirerack website. I'm pretty sure they have a database for various tire and wheel sizes for many vehicles. If I recall correctly, a 225-55R15 is similar in radius to the 205-65R15 which is similar in radius to the 1984 SD's stock 195-70R14. Note that some sizes that look right on paper are not manufactured in the real world. Not sure if the website will give you non-available sizes.
Hope this helps,
