Urgent -- National shop scratched all 4 wheels
A national tire store scratched ALL 4 of my wheels while rebalancing them. If you could draw a circle around the center cap area (with the lug holes on the circle line) you would have the scratch diameter. My wheels are painted, of course, and it scratched the paint -- much more so than compounding it out would fix.
Question: What is the correct way to approach them? What should I reasonable expect? My wheels were not in showroom condition but they only had minor wear and blemishes -- this was on the edges. However, seeing it right on the flat, painted area is very visible. brookspw

The wheels are easily (not necessarily cheaply) repainted. I would see the shop about it after you price the repair at a quality body shop.

scratched wheels
you have the right to leave the shop with your car in the same condition it was when you arrived. if the shop damaged the wheels, they have an obligation to 'make you whole', as the lawyers say. if a repaint is necessary, they'll have to do that plus kick in for the time you're without the use of the car. this may mean a rental, or whatever. i had a nat'l. shop do the same with my Porsche wheels. they were quite good about replacing them with recon'd units. that's what i would press for, as it's not overly expensive for them.

I worked for a national chain called Tire Kingdom as a technician before I moved to go to college, and if wheels were ever scratched they were repaired at no cost to the owner. I suggest you contact them as soon as possible though...

It sounds to me like they may have used the wrong "yoke" to hold your wheels to the spin-balance machine. You set the wheel up on this spindle that rotates, and you have to tighten down with something to hold it. A shop that does a lot of MB wheels will have the proper yoke to hold the wheel without scratching it.
But most spin-balance machines will come with one huge yoke that will hold almost anything. Bet that's what they used. Ken300D |

Discount tire repainted two of my wheels after they scatched them. They did not give me a hard time expect that they wanted to put on newly refinished wheels and I wanted mine refinished. They agreed to refinish mine and put on "loaner" wheels for a few days.

UPDATE to Original Post:
Tires Plus agreed to pay for my wheels to be refinished/repainted at the shop of my choice. We have a local shop that does all of the MB dealer work and they'll be taking care of my wheels (as well as a few dings, etc.) while I am out of town in a couple of weeks. I'll update when the wheels are finished. brooks

The tire place broke two of my hubcap clips. I had to go in and show them how to put the caps back on.

I've had one experience at Sam's club where they damaged the hub. I took it to the dealer and was quoted right around $400. They promptly cut me a check so I could get it fixed. My brother in law had the exact same problem described. He took it to a body shop to get an estimate and they told him that it could not be repaired. He got a check for four new wheels. I would treat this as any insurance claim. Since they know they've damaged your tires, get an estimate at the body shop and submit it to their insurance company.

A sad short story at SAM's tire center
Sam's club broke off three lug nuts trying to get my tires off. I sat there and watched him pop away while bracing on his right side, just guessing and wondering if he had the wrench backwards. Just so you know, SAM's can't extract bolts at their tire center, guess it’s to hard to teach above and beyond Right and left. They told me that they were going to have to have my car towed and get the bolts extracted somewhere else, but all at my expense. But as it turns out they were willing to pay for the bolts (yah the bolts). I asked if I could check something in their shop and my car. I walked into there shop, picked up the impact, while being followed out by the extra chromosome kid and looked at the setting, R as in right. The kid working the impact wrench had it set for tighten. He promptly called the manager who had little to say except sorry we would pay to get it fixed. Sams wisely towed me to Sears tire center to have the bolts removed and for me to purchase a full set of tires from them. Sears was happy to say that Sams regularly supplies them with new customers monthly. Still makes for a weird story.
