18" AMG Monoblock on W210 - what tires? Not the 255 that came on them!!

I needed new tires and came across some 18" AMG Monoblocks with tires on Craigslist. Unfortunately the tires are slightly too large to fit on my 1996 E300. Will these wheels be able to fit with a slightly less tall tire or should I continue keeping my eyes peeled for some 17 or go with a set of knockoffs?

Recommend using genuine MB wheels with the proper offset for your 210 vehicle since MB wheels are hub-centric. If you decide on a wheel that is other than a stock size for a 210 vehicle ensure that the lug bolt seat matches the contour of the wheel seat, and that the lug bolts have the same thread engagement as with a stock wheel.

Thank you for the pointer Ferdman, and I could not agree more. These are OEM AMG wheels and I would love for them to fit on my car, however I have learned to do things right the first time.... after one too many lessons over the years. That being said, I would love to hear everyone's opinions:

I made a stop to Discount Tire after leaving the office to run a test fit with a 215/40r18. Close, really damn close. I'll see what the votes say from the pictures below.

Post from Google Plus - by the way, if you don't have an account you should get one.

The wife and I are leaving on a 1400 mile trip and as much as I would like to run these AMG wheels, I think I am better off finding someone who would like to trade their 17' AMG Monoblocks for a set of 18's when we get back. Unless the votes say otherwise, or I run 205/40 or 215/35, but Michigan roads require a little more meat...

Would running the 255's in the rear with some either 205's or 215's in the front be a bad idea and why?

Should be OK unless you have a bad wheel bearing.

The 18" MonoIIs on my AMG sit that close, if not closer. I have yet to have a problem with quite a few roadtrips/track miles under my belt.
