The wheel covers are just a little harder to get on but I have never lost a wheel cover in the several years I have been running with the clips for the "steelies". I have a few of the proper clips, I should spring for more

I have trouble putting on something which clearly was not designed for the application.

False. They are asking that much because they believe they will find someone to pay that price, and perhaps they do find that person. If you can make someone think something is rare then it might as well be rare to them. Nothing to do with if they are actually rare or not.

Nope, talking about good ol fashioned 6" light alloy disc wheels. Not bundts.

They were standard on US market 300D's according to the factory manuals, but only briefly as bundts became standard in 82 on 300D and steel wheels were used 76-80 ish.

So then it sounds like if you have a ~80 - 81 300D that does not have Bundts' the rims were most likely 6" aluminum.

Correct. And these are fairly sought after rims to various parties.

Might also look at W108s with V-8s for the 6" wide aluminum wheels....

That photo is mine. Note the tail light of my ponton on the left and a piece of my SLK on the right. The wheels are from a 240D. They are 5 1/2 J x 14. They came standard on my '83 240D.
