Feedback on Lowering / Suspension/ Wheel Combo for W210 E420
Can anybody give me any Feedback as to what the best choice would be for a 97 model E420 concerning lowering the car, but not losing to much ride control.
I've read that Sportline springs and Bilstein shocks are a good combination. I'm also thinking about putting a set of 17" or 18" wheels on my Benz. Thanks everybody in advance for your input. Gunter |

Scuba,
Hey, I am over in Nashville, not far from you. I would highly recommend Eibach Pro-kit springs. They will lower the car with NO ride problems. I would also recommend Bilstein HD or Sport shox, depending on how firm you want to go. Unless your E420 is a Sport model, probably best to stay with 17" wheels. I have 18" x 8" on my E430 Sport and 245 40 18 tires with no problems. Like everyone says in this forum, call Luke at Tire Rack or go to tirerack.com to see what will properly fit your ride. Good Luck

The "Sportline" kit can be had for around $1200 from the PartShop.
Scuba, the factory "Sportline" option parts (including shocks) are available from the PartsShop for around $1200 and I think that it is the best combination of handling, ride, and looks available, and all the parts are Mercedes original equipment.
How do you like your 1997 E420? I'm going to test drive an 1997 E420 Sport this weekend. Any problems (trans?). The 1997 E420 is kind of an odd duck, with the new W210 body, and the old M119 engine. I kind of think that its the best of both worlds because I like the new body style, and the M119 is ultra reliable and there is so much DIY information available on it for us DIYers. Any tips would be appreciated.

If you go with Eibach also add the Eibach Pro-Dampers. Another great suspension upgrade for any W210 is the E55 Springs, Shocks and Sway Bars with the smallest spring pads all around. Good Luck.
If you go 17" wheels you can use: 235/45/17 up front on 17X7.5 wheels 255/40/17 in rear on 17X8.5 wheels

Dave,
If you buy a 97 model E420 you will love it, just like I do. I think its a great car, it handles great is quite and if you tickle it.............it will go. The transmission shifts smooth and its just fun to drive. I get about 24 miles per gallon driving to work, I haven't had a chance to go on a road trip yet so I don't know what consumption the car has on the interstate. The only problem I have is, that when I put the car in gear in the morning I have a light rattling noise for about 20 seconds coming from under the car close to the transmission. I think its the heat shield vibrating against something. I'll get that checked out on Monday when I have my transmission fluid and filter changed, including the rear axle and a radiator flush. And like Kevin's recommendation: I did buy some AMG 5 star wheels and put 235/45x17" on the front and 255/40x17" Yokohama AVS db on the back of the car. What a big difference that made on the car, it handles even better now and no road noise at all. I also bought a gear shifter in Germany made out of the same wood (Wurzelnuss) the other interior wood is made of and installed a two piece chrome set that goes under the shifter. I let you know later what I'll do as far as lowering the car, since I need to lower it only about an inch. Gunter |

E55 Suspension
Kevin and others:
I received the E55 suspension today. Got 4 AMG Bilstein shocks, 4 springs, and 2 solid sway bars. Guy in CA couldn't sell them on eBay! I got everything for $450 shipped! Going to install on my E430. Contacted Status Imports-they offered me a fairly nice discount on the Renntech camber kit. Will keep you posted. That E55 of yours here yet?

Mikey,
I'm watching a auction on ebay for a set of E55 springs and shocks but if I don't get them, what would you have to have for your Eibach springs and shocks? Let me know. Thanks Gunter |

Gunter,
I am keeping my Eibach springs on the car. My shocks are stock E430. Will install the E55 shox and sway bars with my Eibachs. Good luck on the eBay auction. It's a deal-off a 2002 with only 135 miles. GO FOR IT! Mike

the E-55 take off stuff...
I wouldn't get too excited about that stuff if I were you. It may meet your tastes, especially as it relates to stock W210 stuff, but the US version E55 suspension ain't that hot. It's too soft, oversprung and underdamped. And the Sportline stuff ain't much better. Yes, it's better than the non-sport, but for all that effort, there's not that much improvement. Even though the Euro spec stuff is better, it's still not up to what the car is capable of. As long as you're going to spend the effort, time and money, I'd do it with some H&R's/bilsteins or Koni's, and spend the rest on the wheel package, as the car is way undertired. There has been some good discussion on this topic at MB world.org in the W210 section. Look for Mr. Vanos' posts. Just my .02, as I've spent a bunch of time and money trying to figure this out. Hope this helps, allen.

scuba, that Ebay auction is over, however, it was not sold. Go to the auction and email the seller, e320sport, and purchase it directly.
