Jim,

The new MXX3s I installed stick like glue-a little noisier than the XGTZ4s were, but seemingly a great deal for $159 per at the Rack

Hi Jim-

Bridgestone S-03's: strong sidewalls, sticky grip-dry, rim protector, inexpensive vs. Michelin

(-): can be a bit noisy on some highway (not so finished) road surfaces

hope this helps

Thanx tons Fad...

I've heard and read good things about those tires too...cool tread design. I'm glad to hear from someone who runs them on a 500E though. Do they chunk up on the sidewall area if tracked or doin' 4 wheel drifting slides?

I am running Z-rated Sumitomo HTR ZR-IIs on my C43 AMG (after previously using Michelin Pilot Sports) and have been very happy with them, particularly in wet weather. They are much less expensive than the Michelins and are wearing better. The Michelins may have a bit more edge-of-envelope performance on dry pavement, but not enough to warrant the extra expense and worse wet weather performance in my opinion.

I understand that the Bridgestone S-03s have good wet and dry performance, but have not tried them and they are similar in price to the Michelins.

Jim-

I've not done any 4-wheel drifts in the E500 ....nor observed any chunking in the sidewall area on the S-03's from a few enthusiastic laps at Willow Springs last November '00.

Mark Stetson also has S-03's on his 500e on 17" DTM, and he's passed positive ntoes on the S-03' too.

Previously, I researched the belt composition(s) of the top 3 Max Performance tires on the market: S-03, Michelin Pilot Sport, and Yokohama. I noted that all three listed identical belt compostions (tread and sidewall)- but noted via my informal touchie feely examination that the the sidewall of the S-03 appeared much more robust vs. the other 2 candidates. I opted for the S-03 based upon Tirerack reviews and my informal sidewall test- especially since the 500e/e500 is not a lightweight and could use nice robust sidwall support for optimum handling.

good luck

I've tried Dunlop SP8000, BFG KDWS, and Nokian NRZi's from Finland. They are expensive, but worth it, esp. since they carry a "extra load" rating.

Unfortunately, they don't have a 225/55R16 or 245/45WR17, so you have to with a 235/45WR17 or a 255/40WR17 with the appropriate wheels for the NRZi.

The NRZ (minus the "i"= info pin) is available in a 255/45WR17 size.

They also have a 225/55VR17 in the NRV line.

The NRZi's are IMHO a great tire and did well at WillowSprings Raceway while at the RoadOne driving school. They drifted predictably at Turn 2, the Rabbit's Ear, and did NOT chunk.

Check them out at:

BTW- what's everyone experience on the Dunlop SP9000's?

Enjoy,
:-) neil

Just about everything....

that's been mentioned here is excellent. The 9000 is also an excellent tire. Thought some folks think they're quiet, my only objection was that they were just a bit noisy. I've tried just about everything mentioned above, and would say that you're in good shape with just about everything mentioned here (that doesn't include 2 in particular--I'll leave that to your judgment). The S0-3 is quite a remarkable tire, my latest set is 225/40 +255/35/18 on my CLK cab, and I can't believe how good the ride quality is for a performance tire. Also, they're really quiet for a Hi-per tire. I did ride on a set of the new Pilot A/S on a 500E the other day in 245/45/17 on evos. I think that tire is going to overcome the objections on the Pilots (noise, treadwear) pretty easiily. They are spendy, much more so than the SO-3. But, the UTQG is much higher than the S0-3 (400!), so you don't have to buy them as frequently. They're all quite good (with the exception of those other 2...), so you'd probably have to work to screw up. Hope this helps, allen.

Wheel/Tire for summer driving?

Hi Guys,

I seem to be getting closer to the tires that should go onto my 500E. So the question remains, what wheels (size) should I get?

I think I will try the S0-3's.

I am looking for a setup that keeps the ASR from always lighting up!

My snows are on the factory rims, and I think I will leave them on. I am going to replace everything to get into a bigger tire (I think).

Also, this car is my daily driver (for the days that the weather is nice) :-)

What would be a good setup?

Thanks,

Dave

I've had Toyo T1-S on my 911 Turbo, and SP9000, Michelin Pilot Sport, S-02PP and P7000 on my MB.

The S-02's were the best, and I imagine the S-03 is even better. I bought the Pilot Sports for my C36, and was happy, but they weren't quite as good as the Bridgestones.

Keep in mind that if you don't like them, they'll be worn out soon anyway, and you can try something else.
