Cleaning light surface rust off of steel wheels....

I just got a new set of original steel wheels that I just picked up for my 300GD. The outsides are in very good shape but the insides of the wheels have some surface rust that I would like to get cleaned up.

Every powder coating shop that I have been to so far wants to redo the entire wheel which I understand but I don't really want to do. (Why mess with the factory finish if I don't have to?)

How would one go about cleaning only the insides of the wheels and what would be a good product to use to coat them once finished?

The factory finish is gone.

It has surface rust all over it.

However, to help you on the way to a compromise if you don't even want to remove the tyres use steel wool and oil to remove the rust. That'll keep you busy for a few weeks!

Then degrease and use something like that MetalReady stuff that POR15 makes => basically water with a zinc solution from what I can make out to try to slow the rust down a bit. Then prime (perhaps with some sort of epoxy based paint?) and then try and copy the top coat colour for that factory finish. It might be good for a couple of years.

A inexpensive media (SODA) Blaster from Harbor Freight and about 30 minutes on those wheels will get you to feeling like a hero. Great tool to have also.

Now there is a thought! I'm reading reviews for their cheaper ($99) 15 lb unit
Soda Blaster - 15 Lb. Portable Soda Blaster
It looks ok but you have to be careful about moisture building clogging it.

Now i've never Sand/Soda blasted anything so I did a quick bit of reading and i'm liking the idea of the Soda blaster! It looks to be much safer and easier then sand blasting and of course I like the fact that once i'm done with this I can just hose down the driveway.

Any recommended procedures/precautions?

Nothing other than the usual: Gloves and Goggles, Face Mask. They are very handy. I get carried away with it sometimes (hey it is set up, what else can I strip). Try it on the grill from your BBQ - amazing

HERE is a YouTube Video of that soda blaster working

Perfect, no haz-mat suit required . I'm thinking that the same thing is going to happen to me as well "Hmm, that wheelbarrow could use a good cleaning."

Yep, already watched that one

I'm probably going to go this route so now I just need to figure out what to coat them with once i'm done.

Harbor Freight has a 20% off coupon in their mailer if that helps in the decision process.

How much are they quoting you to refinish them?

My local wheel repair place will blast and put a really durable coat of powder coating on wheels for like $70/ea. No rattle can job will be as durable.

I bought the SODA blaster from Harbor Freight yesterday and will be cleaning up the wheels next week.

Now it's just a question of time and coating material.

Post some pictures! You should have bought one of those $8 airbrushes to do the wheels with. Thinking some good etching primer the some hammered iron OMNI AU paint Once you get the SB in you are going to wonder why you waited so long to get one.

You can crash at my place until you get settled in. I'm here to help.

But seriously, post pics of how the soda blaster works out, I've been eyeing it.
