tire/rim help 126
I have an 81 300sd that needs new feet. The rims were upgraded to later style but are still 14" The tires on the car now are Michelin xse on the back and Michelin roadhanderler t on the front all 195/70/14. The po was a car idiot! The car handels like crap. It has new shocks bushings and ball joints. I did all of this before I realized that the car had two kinds of tires on it. It never occured to me that someone would do this. Could I improve performance with better or bigger tires/rims. I am greatfull for ANY help as I know little about this. In the past I just went to Discount Tire and told them to give me the best tires. After having read some posts here it looks like this may be somthing they can't look up in a book. Besides most of their exp. seems to be with cars from the east rather than the west!

Hi Dann,
If you took a pole that the MXV's would win. What is wrong with the handling? The two different types of tires shouldn't be that big of a problem. It may be that you are expecting something that the 300SD was not made for. As far as bigger wheels and tires it may help but you need to way the cost/benefit. The SD is a cruiser not a sports car. Maybe some of the other SD owners could tell you what they use. Or go to www.tirerack.com and see what will fit on your car. Their web site is pretty good to check out your options and the prices are pretty good too. If I went to my Discount Tire and said give me your best I am sure I would be paying to much. I have 15" Symmetry's on my 500 SEL and have been happy. |

I just bought a set of the Michelin Pilot XGT H4 205-65R15's and put them on my SD at the end of February. So far so good. 75+ mph in the rain is now no longer a scary thing.
Steering response is faster, at least compared to the Toyo Proxes H4's that were rapidly being eaten off the front wheels. GSmith does bring up a good point, though, handling-wise, a 126 SD is more a German Lincoln Town Car than a Corvette, or a C32... They will corner, but would rather go straight, if you know what I mean. Great crosswind stability, everything is heavy, wheels, rotors, etc. Good gyroscopic effect from all the weight that is spinning as the car goes down the road. I've adjusted my driving style accordingly, being a responsible citizen around town, obeying most speed limits, and only opening her up on long highway runs.
