I have heard that a 225/50/16 will not fit well on a W124, and that a 205/55/16 is a much better fit. Is this true?

Also, does the ATP Type 8 look identical to the real MB 8 hole wheels (1992+ I think?)? Also, will the MB cap fit on that wheel to make them look authentic? Thanks.

The 225/50/16 is I believe the stock size for the 400E or 500e W124 so it will fit your car. The problem arises when people start making modifications to their suspensions away from the stock set up then things start happening. If your lowering then all your suspension pieces should be as new as possible. Also if you car was ever in a front end collision there could be problems that will only manifest themselves after the change over to wider tyres. The 205/55/16 setup is a safe way to go if you are not sure as to the quality of all your suspension pieces.

Don't know about the 400E, but the 500E used 225/55/16's.

The 225/50-16 will stick out of the wheel well and most likely rub when your car is fully loaded or cornered aggresively. The 205/55-16 or the 215/55-16 size works fine on the w124's. The Type 8 Mille Miglia does look just like the factory wheel and we do offer MBZ center caps for it.

Also, what is the offset on the ATP Type 8 vs. the standard rim for the '88 260E? Thanks.

Would this 16" upgrade make a big difference?

The 88 260E factory offset is 35mm with a 15x6.5 wheel. The ATP Type 8 is 16x7.5 and has a 40mm offset.
You will get quicker steering response and better cornering. You might experience more body roll with a factory suspension, when driving very aggressively, due to the greater cornering force the wider tires and wheels are capable of generating.
Thanks, Luke

A 16" upgrade is definitely worth it....just for aesthetic reasons alone. IMHO, 15" wheels look lost in the wheel wells on W124s.

As to OE sizes, the 400E/E420 rode on the exact same 195/65-15 rubber as the 6 cylinder cars.

I'm currently running 225/50-16s on Mille Miglia wheels, and have yet to hear the slightest rub. These tires replaced 205/55-16s, and IMO look better, as they're beefier in section width.

I agree, the only time you will have rubbing is if the car is full with 3 200 lb people in the back and your car is running on the lowest pads and your car comes into a hard corner real fast. I wuld go for the 225/50/16 upgrade cause thats what I used and never really experienced any problems. At that time I was using AMG Aero 16x7.5 witht the combo.

For Michelin in that size, TireRack has the Pilot HX MXM for a special pric of $129. If you don't want the compromise of All-season tires, then the Pilot SX GT are running a special price of $135. If you want the best Michelins out currently, then the Pilot Sports are $216. Trust me you will feel the difference between them.
