I've heard five and six years from different sources. My spare was made in 1996. It hasn't been on the ground since at least 2005. If I ever have to use it, I don't expect it to last long.

I have a set of Michelin Pilote original radials which were put on the car in 1938.

They are shredded. Should I keep them as souvenirs?

Conventual Wisdom vs Actual Condition

Did you buy the tires in '05? How many miles on them? Any cracks or dry rot? Do they sit out in the sun all the time?

I don't necessarily think you have to dispose of them, even though, that's what conventional wisdom says. But answering those questions will elicit more responses from the forum members.

FWIW, I have a 10 year old set of Michelin snow tires that get used for 3-4 months a year in the usually cold, snowy Midwest. So they get some pretty nasty road conditions & temperature extremes. They look great and run great, they'll be going on the car again this Winter.

I have tires on my 66 Porsche that have been on the car since I bought it in 1987. Car is seldom driven , but is always indoors. I do worry when I drive it, but they keep going.

Get Your Tires Checked

And worry you should. 27 year old tires whether they're kept inside or not, have got to have serious dry rot & you risk an unexpected blowout.

It depends on exposure to sun , hot climates. You have to watch older tires for cracks and either remove them or, if slightly cracked, limit them to around town sub 40 MPH and stop at the first sign of vibration.

The tires on the Dodge I got for Mom ( in 95 ) are from 1997 and still fine. Granted the car is garaged and sees limited use. Tires on my 1 ton pickup are from 2000 and just fine.

Tires on the lived in SO Cal 97 C280 I bought last year were from 2010 and completely cracked to the point the side walls were leaking so there was no way I kept them.

As for tires older than 87, I'd replace those from a standpoint of the rubber delaminating from the cords. I've never had a tire suddenly blow. I have had a few that broke a belt and started to vibrate. One deteriorated over the span of a mile and I stopped rather than pressing forward until it popped.

5-6 years. Any more and they become unreliable as in they can disintegrate while you're belting down the highway. I've had that happen to me on a 560SEL. Tires looked OK and had plenty of tread, but let go on a hot Texas summer doing 70mph.

Used tires shops wont mount a tire older that 6 years no matter how good the tread is.

I've had a tire come apart after going over curvy road on a hot summer day.
I was lucky it gave way after the last corner on the straight. Otherwise it wouldn't had been pretty.
