W124 Tyre-Size up to 205 x 15.., any GAIN noted ?
W124 is running on Tyres 195sr60 X15. I have 2 rims and tyres 205 x 15 and what can I gain by fitting these to the rear axle. I will have to find 10 longer wheels studs as these rims are deeper and thicker. Thinking of fuel consumption and saving on the buying of tyres. Estate is 1992 7-seat, 2.0l petrol engine with Auto -trans 4 -speed. Grateful for any help.

196/65R15 is the correct size, not the size you currently have. Using a tire that is larger (circumference) may interfere with the operation of the ABS system.
You didnt give us the size on your second pair of larger tires. A bigger tire rolls fewer times per mile and theoretically saves fuel. But a bigger tire also takes longer to get up to speed, using fuel in the process. Depends on what sort of driving you are doing. More city driving= keep the original tires. More freeway, go with 205/65R15.

The 205 section tires can have trouble fitting into the spare wheel well for wagons at least. The clearance between the fender and the frame rail is limited.
I had 205/65-16 tires on my W124 cabriolet with CLK wheels, and these are too large in diameter to fit into the wheel well under the trunk floor. The 205/55-16 works, though. Jim

^^^ He is correct. The 205/65 will not fit in the spare tire well. I kept a 195/65 on my spare rim and put it back in my coupe's truck. When I had my 123 wagon, it's spare 'space' had a tight fit for an oversize.
I just refit my 124 coupe with 205/65/15's last week from 205/70's that the previous owner out on. To early to report any major changes other than new tires equal better ride.
