500E wheels upgrade - what fits?

I was looking to sort my 1991 500E with some 18" Budniks, but then I realized that as those rims were so expensive it really isn't that much to stretch to 19".
And then, I noticed that 20 inchers fell into my price range as well...(Antera's....Yum..).

Do 19, respectively 20 inches fit on the 500E. If so, what sizes are most similar to a 225/40/18 tire?

I do not want any scrubbing, and thus realise that 20's are probably a bit OTT, but I read EXTREME 500E's threads and he is going to put 19's on it...

I also don't want to have to modify the arches, it's a pain to even get someone to do it right.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Manu, here are my 18' Silver Arrow wheels came off a limited edition 2001 SL500.

I'm selling them. Since I'd like to get 17 inch wheels. I enjoy a little smoother ride. Rem the less tread you have the rougher the ride.

I paid with with wheels and tires close to $5,000.00. If you would like to buy them maybe we can work a deal.

tire specs
1. Fronts Mich Pilot Sports(8.5 inch wheel 245/40/18)
2. Rears Mich Pilot Sports(9.5 inch wheel 275/35/18)

I think you would truely love this setup. If you wanted to purchase this wheel combo dealer only. I work at the dealer so I got a break on the wheels.

If your serious about purchasing please email me at

Greetings Italianbenz,

Those are some very nice wheels, but I could not legally run them on my car in Switzerland, for homologation reasons.

Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it...

Congrats on a beautiful ride.

Greetings Manu,

I was wondering if you have seen this sight? http://www.be-unique.com/virtualshowroom/virtual/default.htm
If you click on the "Virtual Showroom" a new page will launch and then you can select a 500E.

Are the Brudniks you are interested in available here, the selection here seems a little limited, what are your thoughts?

P.S. I think the reason why you have received so little feedback is that no one here has tried 19" wheels or even 20"er's for that matter. That will look awesome I think. The roads are generally in to poor a condition to warrant 19+ wheels I believe.

Good Luck

Ross,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I know the site, been there like a thousand times before. Isn't this the greatest thing? Too bad you can't work more on the color.
Imagine if you could paint your car in different colors or add pearl and make body mods.

There are a lot of Budniks missing from that selection, but the ones I like most are the Gasser. . But there are some many other beautiful wheels at Budnik alone. How about some 19 inches Budnik prism 6 for that Evo II-look? And there are those darn Anvils. ...
And that's without even looking at the other brands. I like the BBS RC and RX a lot also.

Which one's your favorite?

I think I'll go with the 19's on my car. 20's tires are too wide for me, as I don't want to exceed 225 in tire-width. I don't really care for a rough ride really, It can't be that bad after my previous car (Hardcore rally hatch)... And the better handling is worth it I think.

Drive safe

Manu

Question

Manu

Why are you wanting to increase rim diameter and not tire width? 225s on a 19 inch rim may look odd ...in my opinion.

Jim,

I only want to upgrade to larger wheels because it looks so much better. I know there will be a slight improvement in handling but it is not what I am after. I want to tune my car German-style, lowered, big rims, discreet. I don't want to go further than 225 because it is standard width and I don't want any scrubbing, let alone performance compromises. With a 225/35/19 tire on an 8 or 9 inches rim, I don't think that the wheel diameter will be too compromised ( I may be wrong though, I'll need to calculate that).

That's cool, Manu. I like the 'Aufstand' look the new Germans have started too. As you must know...245 tires are run w/o rubbing problems on both 17" and 18" rims...even on lowered cars, which I know you do not desire to do...yet. A 225 tire may be too thin for a 9" rim though. I'm sure you'll get it right for your application...post some pix when its ready.
