R129 16" Rims on an 83 300sd ,& it clears.

Have you ever looked at your early to mid 80s 300sd and wanted a bolt on upgraded looking rim in place of the 14" bundts, well it seems to be a tight fit but the 8" wide r129 rims fit with a couple of modifications ,one is that the bolts for the frt rims need to be slightly grinded back ,maybe 1/8 of an inch to miss hitting the brake caliper ,the backs are fine, these bolts are much longer than what you find as orig . you should take the bolts that the rims have if buying from an individual ,if not youll have to order some or look for 86-91 300sdl rim bolts at the yard. The 2nd is you cant use regular wheel weights for the inside of the rim because of the rim coming in so close to the tie-rod ,its that close of a fit ,this gives the 300sd a much more agressive stance and was had for $150. at the yard .The tire size tha t was chosen was a 225 55 16 and added to the look even more. These are usually found on the 1990 500sl model and look like the 15" 1986 thru 1991 300sdl rims.which are era correct .

tire dize

I just bought a brand new wheel and tire from craigslist and it was the size you're talking about for $50. I thought it was a good deal. I mounted it on the left rear of my 86 300SL. I didn't know that it wouldn't work on the front, good to know. My other three tired are 15" but I just drove it and I can't tell any difference in handling, but I should try to find another 16" tire for the other side,
