2 cars, 1 set of winter wheels

We have a primary winter vehicle. For a second, we have two to choose from. Our 98 E320 (W210) or our 85 300D (W123).

I have been thinking about trying to buy one set of rims with winter tires that could be used on either car.

E320 standard rim/tires are 16x7.5 41mm offset and 215/55R16.
Winters would be 15x7 37mm offset and 205/5R15.

300D standard rim/tires are 14X6 30mm offset and 195/70R14.
Winters would be 7 37mm offset and 205/5R15.

Using this site, this seems to work.

Challenge now, would be to find suitable 15" rims with a compromise offset.

Any comments on my choice of sizes or advice on alternate approaches.

I use my oldest for the snow,a 1983 300sd.Its got thicker metal, and was dipped in wax when it was made. Why destroy two cars in the salt.I wish, they would plow, and use fine gravel, their ruining cars, and lakes, and streams.

I've been looking. Found I needed to go to 16" if I want wheels to fit both cars. If I could find a set cheap just for the 300D, might do that. Not finding much locally that would fit our E320.

Size that would fit both, it seems, are 205/55R16 on 16x7.5 rims with ~35mm offset.

Found a set off Audi, but they have smaller hub diameter and use 14mm studs instead of 12mm.

Will keep checking local ads.

I've come to learn that wheels for my two cars are not interchangeable bc the calipers on the 99 are too big for 15" rims. Also, VW wheels may work too, they are 5X112 pattern and right sized lug bolts are about 50 USD. Cant recall which company, but read about them on some threads here on PP

Problem with VW/Audi rims, is that center hub opening is only 57.1mm vs 66.1mm for MB.

The VW/Audi lug bolts are 14mm while MB uses 12mm with ball head. I am sure someone could make a special bolt with a shoulder to match the VW rims. But how to increase the hub opening?

Come to realize that 15" won't work on W210. Can find many 16" Audi/VW rims, but not MB in our area.

Question

So you already ran the wheel & tires sizes thru the "R&T" website? That's a pretty cool website. I haven't seen it before.

Yes it is neat. That's how I found that 16" rims would fit both my cars. But it didn't tell me that 15" rims won't fit on US spec W210s because of the larger brake disks.

BTW, Do you shoot par

Interesting stuff

I've always used Discount Tire's website, but it lacks a few things that your website has, so I'm thinking between the two of them......

What brand of snow tires did you put on your Benzes?

Single digit handicap, a few "couple over rounds", but no even par rounds YET!
But, that's obviously the goal to ParShoot. And just this year had my first hole in one! Are you a disciple of the little white ball?

The W202 C class, 1994 to 2000 uses 15" wheels and might be a possibility. There were plain 8 oval hole ( I don't have specs ) and a slightly wider AMG wheel.

C280 Sport AMG wheels , thick 5 spoke
202-401-09-02 / 15 X 7 37 et ( 5 1/2" back space )
hollander 560-65202

Also, have a look on car-part.com , call up different cars and look at the wheel section. From the listings you can sometimes get wheel # then run them through the web to get offsets.

The 15" rims apparently won't work on our W210. 16" min needed for NA spec cars.

Keep working at it. My handicap had drifted higher and higher. Now about 11. I had shot par before, even 3 under, but I was much younger then. Now 74. But this year for first time shot my age and not only that, even par 72. Really have no idea how that happened. Two chip-ins, I recall and a lot of putts sunk.

I haven't bought any winter tires yet. Where we live, we get snow, but not that much. I have not had winter tires on any car (except our little smart ca) in 40 years. My GLK with AWD has all weather M+S Contis no need for winter tires. But I would like to have a set of winters on one other car.

Tirerack & Snow Tire Deals

I just bot 8 Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires for my two 124's in the stock 195/65/15 size from Tirerack for $75/ tire and $14.50/tire to ship them. So roughly $360 per car for a set of Blizzaks. I felt that was a steal for the level of quality of tire like a Blizzak. Have you driven in the snow on Blizzaks before?

I haven't, but they are popular around here. If I had rims, I would look at something like that. These days, local shops charge several arms and legs to change tires on existing rims.

And there is a reason for that.

A quality turn table tire machine and good spin balancer will cost $ 15,000 ( US ) , 3 to 4 types of wheel weights in a good assortment of sizes, a guy to run it, a building to put it in, insurance if the tire guy damages a wheel ( or customer curbs a wheel then tries to make a claim ) electricity, heat. . . All that adds up pretty quick.

Long gone are the days when a Coats 10-10 tire machine, a Bada bubble balancer and a tray of weights took care of 99% of cars.
