Stock E55 AMG wheels fit an R129?

I spotted some AMG wheels on Ebay that are off a stock E55. Does anyone know if these will fit my 1992 500SL?

Thanks for your help!

Go to www.mbusa.com

Wheels Aluminum alloy, standard AMG monoblock, 5 slot design. 8.0Jx18 front and 9.0Jx18 rear.

Tires Steel-belted radial, standard 245/40ZR18 front and 275/35ZR18 rear, high-performance.

The above is from the chassis info on an E55 AMG.

Go on the website and look at the starmark section for the R129 model and click on the specifications tab and compare the wheels and tire sizes offered on the monblocks offered to see if they match.

Email the seller and ask him for the offset on the fronts and the rears (staggered setup) It will be in his owners manual. If the fronts are around 30 and the rears are around 19 you will be dead on as that is the ideal set up for a staggered setup on a R129 SL 500.

They will not fit! Mercedes makes wheels basically in three groups. The first set are for S & CL-Class with high offsets like 45. The second is for C, CLK, SLK & E-Class with medium offset like around 35. And the third is the SL with low offsets like 15-25.

The AMG wheels off an E55 will not fit the R129 SL and vice-versa. When you see the same type of AMG wheels for E55 and SL like 18X8 and 18X9 they have different stock numbers because the offsets are different. I also believe they have different size wheel bolts.

These are the precise sizes and part numbers taken from MB brochure number 1110-1003-02-01/0700 "Mercedes-Benz and AMG Light Alloy Wheels". According to that document, the W210 and R129 (pre-06/98 models only) take the AMG Disc Wheel Style II in identical sizes:

Front: 8J x 18 ET 31 (part no. B6 6 03 1007)
Rear: 9J x 18 ET 35 (part no. B6 6 03 1001)

To be clear: the very same wheel is listed for W210 and (pre-06/98) R129. In other words, you can fit the E-Class wheel to your SL. You should fit 245/40 R18 tyres front, 275/35 R18 tyres in rear. No modification is required to the bodywork (that means they shouldn't rub).

I hope this is not too confused!!

PS: Kevin, a low off-set is required ont he R129 for wheels of 8.5J (FA) and 9.5J or 10J (RA).

Kevin! There are no absolutes.

>>>They will not fit! <<<

I have an E class vehicle that has factory installed 600SL braking components and a chassis design that allows the installation of virtually any wheel that could be mounted on a 1992 500SL R129 series. In other words, his staggared set up along with his lugs would direct bolt on to my E class 124.036. My 16X8 ET 34 wheels would direct bolt on to his chassis with no problem. However, my wheels will not fit any other E class 124 series vehicle without substantial modification to that vehicle.

The E55 chassis design is not the standard E class W210 chassis design and may or may not match up to the R129 chassis design. That is why I suggested to smalk to contact the bidder to get the offset. If the front offset on those wheels are 35 or below and the rears are 29 or below(1" wider wheel), they will fit. Admittedly, they may not be ideal, but they will fit. The tires probably won't be a dead on match.

Smalk &TomE500, somehow I was thinking S-Class while typing SL. It would more difficult to fit E55 (et35) wheels to S-Class with high offsets - et45 and different bolt sizes.

Seems like those E55 wheels will be a great fit afterall.

Yes, they'll work...

Have done it on several occasions. But as always, no substitute for a test fit! After tinkering with these cars for over 20 years now, there's always something to learn....

Here are a couple sizes of aftermarket rims that fit well with no clearance issues (on both a W210 E320 stock springs and a R129 500SL H&R S/S) I have owned.

front 18x8.5ET25 (245/40) & rear 18x9.5ET25 (275/35)
& front/rear 17x8ET32 235/45

I had mounted both sets on both cars (no spacers)
