I have an 87 300E with MXV4's on it now. They are a great tire, but they are touring tires and I would rather have a tire that would perform better. Is there a tire out there that performs better than the MXV4 and still lasts a decent amount of time? When I say "performs" I mean grips better on dry pavement, corners better, etc. Ride quality is not of too much concern. Thanks in advance!

Chris,
Since your use to Michelin tires already I would certainly recommend staying with them. That said; I'd recommend the Michelin Pilot SX for much better handling, ride, and quiet. It should also last longer under aggressive driving condtions than the XGT V4.

The Michelin XGT V4 will last a bit longer under low stress conditions (read: highway miles, NOT cornering miles), have better snow traction, but not handle quite as well.

Both should be available in 205/60/15 which is the OEM Sportline tire size. That size will fit fine on your stock rims. I'm putting 235/50/16 Pilot MXM's on the 500E quite soon. I'd recommend the MXM but I do not think it is available in a size that fits on your stock rims. (check with Tirerack to be sure) The 500E had a set of XGT Z4's on it that (although okay) just are inadequate. Not a bad tire, but there are better cost-handling aka cost-gain options out there. The Pilot MXX3 really handles great, but unfortunately does not come in sizes that fit any 15" MB applications and few 16" applications. If your buying wheels and tires then I'd recommend the MXX3 or the MXM. (both from Michelin)

Give Tirerack a click or a call. (banner at top of page) They should be able to give you any/all specific info you want and probably give you the best pricing you can find. I've done the math, shipping is cheaper than local tax on a set of tires. Installation is up to you, but even if your not ordering wheels and tires at once they are still the best deal. (I was buying tires from them long before the days of Mercedesshop.)

Hope this helps...Lee
