205/70/14 suggestions
I need recommendations for tires in the 205/70/14 size. My current tires have plenty of tread left but the cracking is quite bad. I drive this car about 8,000 miles a year. It encounters no snow and only a few weeks of serious rain per year. Occasionally I run it up to redline in D but only for a minute or so. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just did a bunch of checking around because I'm replacing the rotting tire on the spare in the trunk.
I finally settled on a Yok Avid H4...installing next 1-2 days locally. It's fairly inexpensive and suppose to be a very good handling tire and fairly quiet. Snow performance is pretty horrid from what I've read...so, if you see snow with your car, I'd move on. It's not a 80K mi. tire tho. I think it's rated at 40 or 45K mi. Anyway, mounted, balanced and all is $65 + tax. The rest of the tires on the car are the ones on it when I bought it. They're Mich MXV4's.

Thanks for the info. The Avid H4 was on my short list. I don't need a 60,000 mile tire since they will be cracked and rotted long before they are worn out. If any one has these tires do they have a wandering problem? My favorite "tune up road" is grooved as well a lot of highways out here.

I did a search on Tire Rack with your size on H rated or better and the Yoko did not come up. If you can get an H rated Yoko locally in this size I think that would be a good choice.
Given your situation, there is a Sumitomo H rated in this size for $40 or so. Given this car is apparently a toy, I might consider them if you really want to keep costs down. It could be that the Yoko H can't be had in your size since Tire Rack doesn't have it. The Yoko and Sumi both are relatively closed tread patterns, so I don't think it would be prone to effect by grooved road. Good luck, |

Thanks for the info. I am going to see if I can find the Sumitomos locally since Tire Rack do's not have them locally. Actually the car is not a toy I drive it everyday I just don't drive much anymore. Hell my health is so bad it is hard to get in and out of it. Maybe my insurance company will buy me a 280 or 300 se cabriolet. By the way Tire Racks Prices are phenomenal if you don't have to pay for shipping.

hill,
The Tire Rack shipping costs is typically about $6 per tire depending upon where you live, that's UPS dropped where you want it. If they are not in your state, there is no tax. This works better for me than most since I got a wheel balancer and an old tire machine. I prefer doing this myself as opposed to fighting with the kid at the tire store to get it done right. Tire Rack also offers a service that connects you with an installer. Just a thought. BTW, I'm not pushing the Sumitomo over the Yoko, it's just a less expensive alternative. The Yoko's have a known reputation and I'm not so sure about the Sumi. Best of luck with the car AND your health, |

Bought the Sumitomos HTR 200's. $193 + $60 installation. Fairly aggressive tire but not as noisy as the Pirelli's. They do try to follow the grooves in the pavement below 70. Hopefully this will be minimized Thursday with the new sub frame bushings. Thanks again for the info.
Well now that I had the front end sorted out. The Sumitomo HTR 200's still like to follow the grooves slightly but not at 70 or over. Most of that is probably due to a lot of 30 yr old parts still in the suspension. Tried them out at trip digits on a long sweeper and they did not complain.
