Did the upped compression ratio on the V8 in 1993 improve performance?

The pre-1993 400E had 268hp @ 5,700rpm and 295lb-ft @ 3,900rpm w/ a compression ratio of 10:1 and a curb weight of 3,660lb. After 1993, the E420 had 275hp @ 5,700rpm and 295lb-ft @ 3,900rpm w/ a compression ratio of 11:1 and a curb weight of 3,745lb. One must also take into account that the engine management system of 1993+ E420's are somewhat more conservative in character, and also, ASR became standard equipment. IN CONCLUSION, I say, that 1995 E420's are the most badass MB's ever made...he he...

If you are looking for comfortalbe, good shape V8 W124, go as Duck suggested. However, if you planned to mod the car later on, stick with 1992 400Es..

'92 is the only year with Full Throttle Enrichment(or whatever it's called), which will gain you more hp advantage over '93+ 400E/E420..

Singer,
Ignore the compression ratio and curb weight ratings. Just drive a well cared for 92 or early 93, then drive a 94 or later E420. You should notice a difference. The ASR cars were also a tad quicker in my experience. I had an early 93 400E without ASR. The car was noticeably stronger running than a 95 E420 of a friend's. The 92's or very early 93's (without ASR) will be your best performers. The electronics are more conservative on the later models, not to mention MUCH more "ticklish" when it comes to tweaking/mods.

Hope this helps...Lee
