changing tires and wheels
Hi, I'm changing the tires and wheels to 17" wheels with 235/40 tires on my '86 300E, and I was wondering if this is a process that can be done by myself (16 years old, limited wrench-time experience), with a jack and a lug wrench, or i should pay the money and take it to an auto shop to have it done. Opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks a lot.

go for it ,kid!!
shouldn't be a problem-even for a novice like yourself.if your wheels have lugBOLTS like mine and not lugNUTS,which i think all benz' do,the onlt problem you should have is lining up the holes.if you don't have the alignment pins to the rotor get a couple of long skinny screwdrivers to help you line up the holes.i don't have the pins but i wish i did--those screwdrivers are a pain in the a$$

You'd better use a torque wrench for
the tightening, not just a lug wrench. Uneven tightening or overtightening can cause warped rotors and other nuisances.

Look in your original Mercedes Benz tool kit, if you have one, for the alignment pin. Its an Aluminium rod with a threaded end. It took me months to figure out what the hell this thing was If you don't have it then use a long screw driver. I suggest you try and buy it from the dealer though...its a nice thing to have

Also, make sure the bolts are the right type and length. Some aftermarket wheels require different length bolts--the MB ones may be too long (or maybe even too short, though I've never heard of that problem). The surface contact (where the bolt head contacts the wheel) has to be the right shape as well.
