Exclamation Help.....bad vvvvviiiibbbrations!!!

Ok here's the situation:

The Car: 1998 S320 SWB

The Rims: 16" 235/60/16 from a 95 s500

The Tires: 225/60/16

Problem: Balanced/Mounted them, found out they were staggered (didn't know that), but it shouldn't have been a big deal, as apparently the tires would fit. In the local area it rode normally, but on the highway I noticed the worst vibrations I've ever felt in a Mercedes. Brought the car back, and had them balanced again, but still the vibration. Do you think the vibration is due to using the same size tires on both front and rears? The seller said it would work...what should I do?

HELP! Sorry this question probably seems stupid, but I'm new....thanks!

When they balance the rims did they pay attention to if the rims were possibly bent, or did they watch for tire runout?

Yes, they confirmed the wheels were straight....however I'm not sure about tire runout.

Here's what you need to do. Go outside and look for weights on the outboard lip of the wheel. If there are no weights on the lip, look just behind the spokes all the way around for tape weights. Weights in either of these locations indicate that they were dynamically balance and that's good. These are the two balance weight location for the outer plane. If there are no weights in either of these locations, go back and INSIST that weights are used on two planes with a computer balancer and RECHECKED after the weights are applied.

If there are weights on inboard AND outboard planes, you need to have the wheel/tires checked on a gsp9700 Hunter wheel balancer. This machine can check for a bad tire and for wheel straightness. To find a shop with one of these machines, go to www.gsp9700.com.

I got so frustrated trying to get the shops to balance my wheels properly, that I bought my own Coats computer balancer. All my cars now are smooth at whatever speed you want to drive them.

Don't take any crap from your tire store about not putting weights on the outside, the wheel will "wobble" and you will have vibration, period.

Good luck,

Well, it's obvious that you don't want to go back to the shop that has tried it twice.

Most any tire store has a decent computer balancer. All you have to do is call a few shops that seem reputable and explain to them that you want your wheels DYNAMICALLY balanced with weights on the inner AND outer plane. If they don't seem to know what you're talking about, call the next tire store.

If you tell them that you want weights on the inner AND outer planes, they will either know what you mean or offer a blank stare.

If after getting them balanced as I describe you still have problems, then it will be time to seek out the 9700, but I seriously doubt that you will have to do this. Proper dynamic balance will most likely fix you up.

Good luck,

GSP9700 Wheel Balance

I wanted to thank LarryBible for letting me know about the GSP9700 machine. I had a very pesty balancing problem and my tire dealer could not resolve after 3 attempts. I thought I had a tire problem or a mechanical issue. I went to the Hunter site and found someone with the machine and voila!! The tires sre fine, the wheels are fine, it was ultimately a matter of an ounce here and an ounce there. The car runs smooth up into the 90'sMPH

What a relief. Thanks for the tip!!!

I'll bet you a spark plug against a spare tire, that both of you simply had a static balance job done by the original balancing shop.

You could have gotten good results with any good balancer as long as someone who knows to use weights on two planes and has an IQ abov 70 is doing the work.

I'm glad they're smooooooothed out.

Have a great day,

balance computer out of balance

Actually, it seems the first folks doing the balnce had a machine that muct have been out of calibration. They were spin balancing and weighting both the inside and the outside. Just putting wrong weights in the wrong place!!

The beauty of the 9700 is that I know the tires and wheels are in good shape. I have had tires with systemic problems that no one would acknowledge like out of round or "roll out" to one side.

This technology is far superior!!

Thanks again
