what size tires to buy?

OK here is the scoop, I have H&R springs, Bilstein Sport's. My wheels are MB 16" 5 hole wheels. Offset 41 and 7 1/2 wide. They currently are wrapped with 215/55 conti's. These things are rubbing like crazy. I would like to be able to cruise with all my friends and not rub...including my fat friends... Due to my budget I would like to find some used tires for the time being. I have found a good deal on a set of michelin pilots they are 225/50 but I am afraid they will rub I have also found some 225/45 not sure on these.. do I need 215/45?

Please help

Hi Brandon. You don't say if the rubbing in on the side or top of the tires so I will assume it's on the side as that's the most common. The 225x50's will be 11.5 millimeters shorter but 10 millimeters wider. If your rubbing the sides these will only make it worse. The 225x45's are 34 millimeters shorter but again, 10 millimeters wider. The 215x45's are 43 millimeters shorter ( or about 1 1/2 inches ) which will leave an obivous gap between tire and fenderwell but are just as wide as your present tires. If the sides are rubbing I would try to find a 205x55.They're only 11 millimeters shorter and 10 millimeters narrower. Hope this helps.

oldfart46, (cool name) Thanks for the reply.. I am scrubbing on the fender sides as well as on the fire wall side. I looked under and saw shiny metal today .. on both sides too! I want to be able to go over a dip doing 60 with a car load and still not scrub!! as it is I cant take anyone with me!! Also with the shorter wider tire... since it is quite a bit shorter wouldn't that do away with the scrubbing? or will travel distance still be enough that it will scrub? Also I like the low profile look I dont mind a little gap in the wheel wells right now I am in the negative!!

Thanks again

Brandon, to be honest, if you want to carry other people (more weight) then you really need to go narrower. A shorter tire probably won't scrub as bad until you add the weight. Then you're back to square one. There are threads on the forum about rolling the fender lip to gain tire clearance. And sometimes on the inside you can "massage" the area that's scrubbing with a small sledge hammer. Just know what's on the other side of where you're pounding . Other than that, your best best is a narrower tire. The real short tire I mentioned will also play hell with your speedometer, slightly lower gas mileage, but maybe feel a little quicker off the line. The much shorter tire will feel like a lower rear gear change, albeit slightly. I enjoy stuffing as much rubber under the fenders as I can but not to the point of scrubbing the tires and sheetmetal. Since you're on a budget buying a set of wheels with the perfect about of offset that will allow a wider tire is too expensive. Wouldn't do it myself either.

Brandon.............it's gorgeous!!!! I don't blame you for wanting the bigger tires but from the picture it looks like the wheelwell is pretty much full. The wheels are really nice too so I wouldn't change them just to try to accomodate a slightly larger tire. I can see why you you're carrying people around in it. I imagine everyone wants to ride and be seen it.
...............awesome ride..............nice stance............very sharp............. (I'm mumbling now!)

oldfrt46,
Thanks very much I am glad you like ..........one last question for the road (pun intended) If I were to go with lets say a 16" Et 35 wheel would that give enough clearance to allow the use of the 225/50 ? Or would it still be tight?
Thanks again,

Have a great day
