What kind of tires?

on my 1985 300TDT i use Micheline X - One's.

that was the recommendation as the best tire when i first got them. they came with a 6 year, unlimited mileage warranty (back when they first came out).

the tires lasted me 30,000 miles and i got a new set for free. this time the warranty had changed to 80,000 miles. well... again i only got about 30,000 miles out of them. they wear evenly and just as they should.

so i got my third set for free. my third set has only lasted me 30,000 miles and they are ready to be replaced, under warranty.

my question for you guys is, has anyone else had the same expereince with the X-one?

yes i drive a little aggressive, but i don't abuse the car or the tires. the wagon is heavier than the sedan, and ive done several road trips with the wagon loaded to the roof. that may have to do with the fast wear.

ive also heard that it may just be that these cars are too big and heavy for these tires.

but hey... as long as im getting free Michelins, ill keep with the X-one. otherwise id go to the MXV4.

cheers

eric

Thumbs up

can't help you on the tires, but i gotta say, that sure is one sweet wagon! i've seen a few pictures of it in other threads, and it looks like one of the finest, mintiest 300TDs out there.

Yeah I agree that is one nice wagon you have... very clean and everything.

There is one wagon that I see from time to time. It's beige and it's just so perfect and makes me feel embarassed whenever I look at his and look at mine...

BTW, I just went from Rainforce MX4's to MXV4 Plus' and I think the difference is worth the money spent.. even the passengers could tell..despite the fact that they run at higher pressure and are thinner..

Yokohamas! Yokos are better than michelins and are a lot cheaper! That's what I'm gonna put on my car!

Wait, Nate - I thought you already put the Yoks Avid Touring?? You're lying to me, man??

My mechanic suggested as soft a tire as I can get (his suggestion-Michelin Energy). So I went with Yoks Avid T4's. Then I went stupid and went with H-rated Dunlops. After 5K mi I experienced strong vibrations at 75-80mph. I rotated the Dunlops to the back and put half bold Yok's up front. No vibration. Go figure.

By the way, Peyton, driving at 119 mph is "not abusing" a 20-year-old car???

119mph

119mph was just to test it. never been up that high again. she was rock solid though and my mechanic said it would do no harm, so long as i didn't have it that high for long sustained periods of time.

hasn't effected her as of yet either. runs like a champ at 232,000!

Any Michelin will be a good tire. Right now I have a set of Metric X's, and they have been doing good. I might switch over to MXV4's one the next set of tires I get. I know people that run those, and they have said that they are great tires.

I have used Michelins for 40 years. They used to have a warranty but a couple of months ago, one wore out and Costco said they are no longer warranted. They said the only warranty you might get on them now would be one offered by a dealer, not the manufacturer.

Next time, when I need a full set, I will try the Yoko's.

If you want a top class tire, in every meaning of the word... Buy the Avon CR338. Best tire I have ever used!

Just got a pair of Dunlops SP Sport 5000 for my Wife's Stang from Tire Rack. Partial warranty for up to last 2/32" of tread. Full warranty for the first 2/32". Worth checking this out. But I would not recommend running Dunlops on a MB.

Call Tire Rack and discuss.

I have Michelin MXV 4 Energy Plus (however it's worded) on my VW Passat. These came on the car new. I have owned the car since new and now 32,000 miles later, there isn't much tread left. I have about 1/8 of a inch until the wear bars. Also the tires are dry rotting all the way around. For a "premium tire" this is sad. In my area these tires, new, cost about $135 a piece. Alot of the miles are highway, so I don't understand. I e-mailed Michelin and they said, aside from a tread warranty, their tires have a 6 year construction/material warranty. They have recommended that I get my tires inspected for a possible warranty replacement.
Some one mentioned Avon tires. The only place I seen that tire name mentioined was with regard to Rolls Royces. I have never seen them at any tire shop or even at Tire Rack. Are they really a good tire and where does one find them, oh and most importan, how much?
