Question Tire Rack : ASA Type 15 Wheels and the supplied lug bolts...

Hi,

My mechanic ordered a set of wheels and tires for my 300CD. They are ASA Type 15 (15x7) with Michelin MXV4 Plus' tires. I love the tires and and wheels... however...

The supplied lug bolts are really wrong for these wheels I mean they fit and they are even nice enough to supply a wrench extension because the lug bolts are not the long bolts as they are supposed to be to make the wheels look right.
As in the lug bolts are supposed to be flush with the face of the wheel.

However this is not the case with the supplied lug bolts.. they are all the way in there and they just look awkward...

Do you guys happen to have the correct lug bolts to make it look right ? Would the Mercedes lug bolts for the factory 15-hole 15" wheels (late model 126/107) fit?

Thanks
-Holson-

If our sponsors can't help, you might try

www.mikeauto.com/lugbolt.htm

or

www.prestigewheel.com/Image990115.asp

But make sure you get the right seat profile (conical, ball, or whatever else) to match your rims' seats.

hhm those lug bolts are not available anymore.

Anybody else? Tire rack? Do you guys sell the lug bolts that would make them look right?

These are great looking wheels and I'm thoroughly satisfied with the purchase. However I'd love to have the right looking lug bolts if possible.

Thanks.

Holson -
Any update on your disappearing lug bolts?

I am about ready to order some ASA Type 8's (16x7.5) for my 85 500 SEL. I would be disappointed (as I am sure you are) if the face of the wheel has deep holes because the bolts are not long enough. Otherwise your pic's are great - everybody loves a new pair of shoes.

Luke? any help out there on these wheel packages?

I called Luke and he said that they don't supply the longer lug bolts anymore because they tend to break at the neck part.

When I was at the dealer I wanted to buy them anyway.. but the parts guy told me... they don't sell them anymore..
I guess.. I'm stuck with these.

THey are ugly I must admit...

When I needed all new lug bolts to put W126 wheels from a 1988 300SE on my W123, I found them here on FastLane.

All I had to do was specify the car was a 1988 300SE and get the lug bolts from that car's parts menu.

They have the long neck extension that makes the head of the bolt sit flush with the outside of the wheel. You are right, the shorter bolts look funny.

However, there is no way to know if lugs made the right length for MB wheels will be the right length for non-MB wheels. About all you can do is order some and send them back if they are not the right length. Also, the MB lug bolts have what I would call a "ball" seating surface to match later MB wheels, rather than a flat seat. I guess the advantage of the curved seat is so that the wheel is centered well on the hub.

Regarding bolt breakage - yes, I bet you can break those long bolts pretty easily with an air impact wrench. That's why I never let anyone mount wheels on my cars. Use a torque wrench to the proper value of 80 ft-lbs and you won't ever break one of these bolts. I bet its a real mess to get off a wheel if you do break one of those long lug bolts!

I have checked with Fastlane and they don't seem to sell them anymore either

I am kinda sure that if I buy the new bolts they will last and there should be wayss to drill it out if one does break.. :p

I have checked the bolts and compared them with the 560SL's bolts and they are the same... now... where can I find them ..hhmm..
The dealer won't supply me with them...

Yes - you are right, they have disappeared from FastLane.

Guess I got what I need for both cars just in time. I got the long-neck bolts (they were FEBI brand too) for the W126 wheels on the W123, and I got a set of generic lug bolts to make the W124 look nice again.

Its strange that the W126 lug bolts would not be available any more. I just checked 1987 300SDL and they are not available.

I think you are going to have to call around to dealers and resellers directly for this one. I don't know if a typical dealer will ship parts. But if you want I have some contacts by E-Mail that have gotten parts for me before.

ZZ Motors will ship. Try www.zzmotors.com

Holson, can you give me an approximate length of the bolt neck you would need to get the flush look on those ASA wheels? I am hoping my existing OEM bolts will give me the look I am after, with new wheels on my W126

Check out that last lug bolt - the only long-neck lug bolt. These are what I need but they cost a lot of money..

Thanks for the info.
At least we know they are available.
They are not cheap, but not much is these days.

Check Fastlane, They stock them again. I just ordered them.

I am thinking that they should be just fine especially if I hand tighten them and not use an impact wrench to tighten it.

Just go to Fastlane and go under any of these cars..

W126 or R107 after 1986...
300SDL, 350SD, 350SDL, 560Sl, 420SEL, 560SEC, 560SEL, etc.

I'll post the part numbers when I get them anyway.. hopefully tomorrow. Probably won't be replacing the bolts until Thursday night anyway.. since I have a big exam on Thursday.
