I have an opportunity to purchase a Starmark 1993 MB 300CE 3.2 Sportline for $24,900. Thoughts? Good car? They are gonna give me $21,000 hopefully for the 1997 C280 I'll be trading in. New car is smoke silver/parchment. Trade in is white/parchment.

I asked the question a while back regarding the w124 coupe vs w124 sedan. The general consensus seemed to be that the coupe looked better, was heavier than the sedan, tho shorter by about 5", had several minor mechanical tweaks different than the sedan, and could have an expensive problem when and if shoulder harness problems arose because of the mounting system. Also, certain years seemed to have engines that were tweekier to work on, but I believe the group felt the 93 was a good year m104 motor. The feeling seemed to be that the sedan offered a better bang for the buck, but the coupe looked much better. I decided when I look for my second w124 I would probably pass on the coupe and search for a starmark 400E. Happy hunting.

I agree with you in every aspect. The only reason I'm pursuing this is b/c it is a Sportline, and they are so rare and so awesome.

I Sportlined my 300E for around $2000, and got everything but the steering ratio, smaller steering wheel, and interior trim parts. I agree, there are awesome handling differences, and a Sportline Coupe is pretty irresistable. However, I suspect the price difference between a 93 coupe and 300E sedan is more than $2000. Also, from what I gather, the 400E is already pretty much Sportlined, with the added advantage of better brakes and a V8 while retaining most of the fuel economy! A real difficult choice between the two - Good looks vs stealth and horsepower!

The 400E is numb in steering feel though.

The overall feel of the V8's is certainly not as nimble as the M103 6cyl cars but if you put some better rubber (wheels/tires) on the 400E it will really wake up.
Hope this helps...Lee |
