Help - replacing springs on 190E

Hello,

My 87 190E 2.6 is sagging and often bottoms out on speed bumps these days, so I want to replace the springs and shocks. My dilema is that I would like to stiffen the ride up a bit, and every aftermarket spring I can find lowers the car. Can someone recommend a good route for stiffening up the ride a bit with minimal or no lowering.

Comments, ideas, wisdom greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

John

Check under cars...

on top of this page. Then, look under sportline upgrade...

Yeah, I saw that, but it looks like they only are selling kits for w124 bodys. I'm a w201. Could I just use those springs with bilstein hd or sport shocks?

I'll submit this idea for your consideration.

If you're current springs are visibly sagging and the ride is soft, then you might be surprised at how stiff the ride would be with just new *stock* springs and new struts. It would certainly be a huge improvement... but it still might not be stiff enough for your taste.

Just a thought.

If you don't want things too stiff, but a way better than stock, then I would go for the Bilstein HD shocks. I have them on my 16V and they are great. If you don't want to lower the car too much, then you can try to keep it closer to stock by using #4 pads all around.

Later,
Giancarlo

Itgb, do you have the part number for the rear w201 #4 pads. I have the part #s for #1-#4 in front but only #1-#3 in the rear. Do they make a #4 for the rear w201? Thanks.

OK, turns out the sportline kit is available for the w201, so I went ahead and ordered it up. A lot of money for a 15 year old car, but I plan on keeping it for at least another 10 years, so I think it's a fine investment.

Anyone have any experience installing this kit? Any tips?

Oh, one more thing - what tires should I get (replacing them too). Stock rims.

Thanks!

Hey kiato,

Sorry, I don't know the part number for the pads. I'm not even sure if they make a #4 pad in the rear. It might only go up to #3.
I'm sure you can ask Pat on the 190 Forum, and he can let you know. If you really need it higher in the rear, and they don't make a #4 pad, then you can cut a #1 pad and lay it on top when you put in the spring. That way you would have the height of a #4 pad. I actually had to do this on my car before I installed the Eibach springs, because the stock 16V springs were not stiff enough and the car sagged in the rear.
