Converting Wheel Bolts to Studs & Nuts
As I continue preparing our '84 190E for SCCA performance rally competition, I am faced with the problem of wheel bolts vs. lugs and nuts. SCCA performance rally is competed on non-paved roads and is quite demanding on the wheels and tires. Punctured tires are very common and speed is of the essence when changing a flat. The stages are often run at night in the woods where it is very dark, and the idea of fumbling around in the dark trying to align the wheel holes doesn't thrill me.
I am thinking about changing over to the more-common setup of wheel studs and nuts. Has anybody made this conversion? Any help is appreciated. Best Regards, Rob

Thanks for the info. I will look into getting the studs as you recommend. However, my biggest concern is with the nuts, since Mercedes-Benz uses a round-shoulder bolt and I don't see any round-shoulder nuts like that on the BMW website. Does anyone know if such a thing is available?
Best Regards, Rob

You may have a difficult time finding lug nuts with round seats. Also called radius or "ball seat". You may have to also invest in a cheap set of racing wheels. Good Luck.

It would be pretty simple and less costly to take the lug nuts to a machinist and have the seat profile changed.
Or you could buy new wheels. Jeff |
