What Do You Think Of These Wheels?

I've decided finally on a set of wheels for my car after searching for six months. I picked the Carlsson 1/16th Ultra Lite which is the Carlsson wheel of choice for the new E-Class. Here is a link:

http://www.carlsson.de/gb/news/news_e/news_eklasse_e.html

I think they look absolutely amazing and I know they'll update and compliment the looks of my car.

I'd be curious to hear everyone elses comments too. My other choice was the EVOII, think they're better?

The problem is I can't seem to find them for sale anywhere. Anyone know where I can find a set in 18 x 8.5 for a 92 500E. Luke if you read these threads let me know if you can get a set over at TireRack. I want to purchase in January next year.

Looks very nice!
18" wheels will be a 1+ pounds lighter too

When did you move to Temecula? I thought you were in O'side...

Hi Glen,

Thanks for the comments, can't wait to see how they feel on the car! I wanted to hear your opinnion on your recent wheel upgrade and how it's affected your car.

We actually moved to Temecula two months ago, we needed more living space and I needed a bigger garage! We also liked the school systems.......no kids yet but it's only a matter of time.

I'm really happy with my new wheels/tires! The stock wheels with very worn Michelin Pilot XGT Z4s in 225/55-16 were *causing* the ASR light to come on all too often.

I'm sure you're wondering how ride comfort was affected. This will probably surprise you but the ride during normal driving is better than stock. Washboard type surfaces do upset the car more but still very acceptable. I chose the Yoko AVS ES100 over B'stone S-03PP due to a higher rated ride comfort, wear, and noise.

So, if you're wondering about ride comfort between 16", 17", and 18" wheels, my take is that with proper consideration to what you want to accomplish, 18" wheels can provide a very acceptable ride. I imagine 19" could be acceptable too.

Tough Decision!

Afshin:

Both are great looks ... the Carlsson 1/16s definetly updates the W124 ... good choice. However, the Evo IIs are classic-old school. Tough decision ... you've got a couple of months to decide!

Good luck!

Thumbs up

That's the best way to go Afshin !

The multi-spoke design is going to enhance the beauty of your 500E. Take the credit card out from your wallet, order them and pay them in January...

Norman,

It is a tough decision but one thing certainly makes it much easier. I really want 18" wheel diameter and unfortunately the only place to get the EVOII in 18 is in Japan.

At this point I'm leaning towards the Carlsson's. Now I just have to wait for the wheel supply shops to get them in.

Ernesto,

Hmmmm.......credit car huh......I wonder if my wife would notice!

Afshin:

They both look great, but the EVOs would be easier to clean, no?

John,

I agree that the multi-spoke wheels will be a PITA to clean, but I think Afshin's 500E is using high performance pads (EBC Green Stuff) which eliminate the problem of brake dust.

Is that right Afshin ?

John,

I really did consider this when I was looking at these wheels. As Ernesto mentioned I will be changing over to the greenstuff pads which greatly reduces break dust. Also I believe the Carlssons have a special coating that makes them easier to clean, not sure exactly what it is, probably just a clear coat. But the combination of the two will hopefully keep me sane.

Ernesto,

Glad to see you back on the forum! So when are we going to set up a GTG to install the grilles? Did you ever refinish your other grille or have you decided to wait for the new one?

Only Machos here Paul, please do not share with us your personal preferences... ja, ja, ja, ja

Hello guys ! Receive my greetings from Mexico City

Whenever you decide to make the grill istallation is ok with me... but probably I am going to leave the grill that I've got from Germany for a little longer... As a matter of fact after installing the euro headlights the german grill looks nice to me...

I'll post a recent picture for you guys to judge, ok ?

Sorry again for missing the next GTG...

Haaahahaha!

A Hanz and Franz reference, huh. Remember this?

"Listen to me now and believe me later. I'm gonna pump you up!"

The grill that Ernesto bought is of marginal quality. It's basically plastic that has a plasticized chrome over it, and then the louvers are painted a shiney black.

I wonder if we'd be better off buying an oem S600-style grill with the chrome strips and doing whatever mods are needed to install it....

Don't get me wrong Paul, you know how easy I can change my mind... Let's do the S600 grill and see how it looks... I can always keep the german one and re-place it whenever I am into the mood... Some dollars are not going to hurt that much...
