What is cheapest way to ship wheels w/tires?

Hello.

I have to send out 4 rims and tires off my 92 400E. What is the most cost effective way to do this? It will be going about 1200 miles.

Thanks for any advice.

Andy

if you work for a big company, check with your mailroom and find out if employees are allowed to ship personal stuff. you can save a bit that way. i think each tire would probably cost you more than $25. also figure how you would package them. tire rack has the safest way to prevent damage to the rims with the cardboard protectors strapped on both sides. the boxes for those could get expensive.

I actually just shipped them FedEx Ground. That turned out to be the cheapest way. I got 2 boxes from Uhaul that fit 2 tires in them each. Each box with both wheels (rims with tires mounted) weighed in at about 86 pounds. To ship all 4 from NewYork to louisiana was only $85. UPS wanted a minimum of like $130.

Just a tip for anyone needing to do this.

Cheers

Looking for a box

What size box did you get from u-haul?

I measured the tires and wheels and figured that I needed
28X28X22 to fit two tires w rims.

I called u-haul and they only had 24X24X27.

Thanks.

JC

JC,

I did in fact use the 24X24X27 "microwave box" from Uhaul.

It was a tight fit but worked. If you are shipping wheels from your C280, they should fit. You figure that a brand new tire will have about 24.9" diameter. Take a wheel down and I bet it will fit snuggly. Just use alot of tape. And word of advice, DO NOT use the Uhaul tape they have there. Use the clear tape that Fedex and UPS has. The uhaul tape rips.

Good luck

Andy

Just a caution about FedEx Ground....

My wife is currently having a bad experience with FedEx ground. Took them 10 days to get a package shipped out of their Allentown PA office. Someone is not going to be happy for Christmas.

I would advise people who use FedEx Ground to be patient. I realize this is only one out of millions of packages, and I had UPS take 3 weeks once to get a package from Massachusetts to PA, but I just thought I'd vent a bit....

Just an update, Fed Ex showed up at our door the day after Christmas with our package. They were SUPPOSED to ship it somewhere else, rather they dropped it, dragged it around a bit, damaging the doll house inside (fancy flakeboard with wood trim, not assembled) and returned it to our door!! They said the address was destroyed, but they found OUR address to ship it back to us... a claim is underway. Will keep you posted (if you're interested...)

Your experience is probable the exception. I use FedEx Ground on a daily basis without any problems. It costs a little less and shipping time improved over UPS.
