Nokian Hakkapeliitta snow tires
Hey all,
Was considering a set of these 'Hakkas for my 300SD. Haven't had any experience with them before, only the Michelin Arctic Alpins which I loved on my 300E. Anybody have any insight on these tires? The Hakka 1's are studdable. I think they do also make another tire which isn't studdable but is also supposed to be good. Also, what do these cost versus $70/each for 205/70R14 size Arctic Aplins? Thanks!!

I've got Hakkas on my 240D. I like them much better than the Blizzaks I had before. Can't compare them the Arctic Alpins (no experience). My tires are a little smaller than the SD's--I think I paid $334 for a set of 4, mounted, balanced, installed (this included Michigan tax).
I'll probably buy Hakkas again when this set wears out. |

Aaron, we have Hakka Q 205/60/15 on our BMW (with automatic); without question the best snow tire I've every experienced in 25 years of driving every kind of vehicle on 4 wheels.
Equipped with these ($110 each from Greer Enterprises in Wisconsin), the car, with rear-wheel drive, provides I'd say about 85-90% of the capability of a typical automotive all-wheel drive system.

I put four non-studded Hakk Q's on my wife's Subaru this year, (replaced worn out Blizzaks), and she said the car goes, stops and steers better than it did with the Blizzaks. They are not cheap though - I paid about $100 per wheel mounted and balanced, but they are the ultimate tire for snow traction. But, if you do more dry than snow covered road driving, you may want to consider the Nokian WR, which technically is an all season, but has the international snow flake designation meaning it qualifies as a snow tire too.

FWIW I put Hakka WRs on my ML. Not only does it blow the abilities of the previous Generals away but it is quieter, and provides a substantially softer, improved ride!

Nokian winter tires
I just returned from snow conditions up in Lake Tahoe. My newly installed Nokian WRs (205/60-15) on my 4matic worked brilliantly.
The big surprise, however, was how nicely these 2003 model tires performed in the dry, at highway speeds. They were a significant improvement over my previous P-210s. Nokian bills these WRs as all season, but they maintain M+S rating, with the "winter" symbol (snowflake and mountain). The officials thus consider them full snow tires. I recommend these for those of us who need snow tires, but nonetheless spend most of the winter on dry or wet conditions. (90+% of my winter driving does not involve snow, but when I need them in Tahoe, the officials demand four wheel drive with snows. These suit the bill.) I had them shipped from a Nokian dealer in Colorado directly to my favorite garage, where they were installed: Meadow Creek Tire at 1-800-222-7360. I dealt with George, an honorable fellow, who charged a bit less than others. Note that all of my other tire purchases are from TireRack, but as they do not carry these Nokians, I had to look elsewhere. Sorry, Luke!
