Going Old School ... 500E with EVO IIs

I just mounted the tires and wheels today ... Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP 245/45ZR17 and MBZ OE (Speed Line) Evo II 17 x 8.25, polished.

Luke (Tire God) steered me towards the Firehawks ... I'll report how they wear and handle soon. The Firehawks are about $30 USD less than the Bridgestone SO-3s (which I was planning on getting). My local MBZ dealership did me good ... $325 USD per wheel. I had to get new wheel bolts ... $120 USD for all four corners.

Suspension is stock, at the moment.

So what does everyone think?

What a difference new tires make ...

Thanks John (and Leise too). Having tires with treads sure makes a difference. I will say this, the ASR sure works well when you have slicks!

Thumbs up

Norm,
Thanks for the ride!
Those Firehawks are quiet and ride great. EvoII's look "so right" on a 500E

A mild lowering and you're all set!

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Now it's time for some Meguiars Endurance Tire Gel for the tires ... and, is it just me, or do the calipers and rotors need some attention? The rotors look .... small.

Does anyone know what is the largest size rotors that the 17" Evos can accommodate?

The easy and "relatively" inexpensive option is to use SL600 brakes...320 mm (12.6") front rotors and calipers. Will clear no problem. These are the same brakes as the '94 E500. I'd imagine around 340 mm (13.4") would be the largest rotor you could fit inside a 17" wheel.

I just checked Bergwerks, they list a 13 5/8" RennTech kit that'll clear 17" wheels...for $3745.

yhliem:

You did have an influence on me selecting this wheel ... are your cars (500Es) set up with a stock ride height? If not, what did you do and how did you do it?

Hi Norm,

Wow....i'm flattered!

Both cars are at stock ride height. I didn't feel the need to lower them or spend the money to do so. Not yet, anyways.
