1985 190e Wheels/Tires

I have a stock 1985 190e with the 14" rims and 185/65/14 tires. I want to do 2 minor upgrades to the car.. Rims/tires and springs.
For springs I have chosen HR's that will drop the car 1.3 inches. I am going to use bilstein struts with them. Now I need help with rims and tires. I would like to use 16 inch rims. 17 inch will be too harsh and the potholes here in upstate NY will destry them.
What do I need to get? 16 by What? What ofset do I need and what tire size will fit? I would prefer to stay above 40 series tires (again.. pot holes.). I look forward to your help.

Luke will probably have the definative answer, but the 190E can handle up to 7.5" wide rims and the typical offset that does not require fender modifications is in the mid 30's (34/35)

Attn: Luke

Thanks for all the info. I have an additional thought. In searching for rims, I see a bunch of 17" rims I really like, but not many 16". I am looking for a very specific design and am beginning to wonder if I may have to go with 17's after all. If that is the case, what width and offset do I need? Can I special order rims that do not appear on the TireRack website? What tire size? Am I now down to a 40? I am willing and able to roll the fender lips if need be. Thanks for the support guys.
